AUSTRALASIA v. ENGLAND

In the second round of the Davis Cup (he matches between England and Australasia opened to-day on the Allegheny County Club’s qourts at Sewickley, a suburb of Pittsburg, two singles being played. Hawkes (Australasia) met Lowe (England). Hawkes appeared nervous and unable to negotiate shots to the right, which Lowe was continuously placing. Hawkes’ backhand play was also faulty, and he lost the first three games in the first set by mediocre playing, but he won the fourth, when Lowe careless. The Englishman took ? the next two games. Both men were 'playing a long court game. Hawkes won [ tho next three games and the tench game went to deuce, advantage alternating three times until Lowe beat the Australian at the net, winning the set. In the second set Lowe won the first | two. games easily. Hawkes won the [ third game on his service, and Lowe j took, the fourth. Hawkes, thereupon, : showed the only spurt of brilliant ten- ■ nis in the entire match, and won tho ! next three games. Lowe recovered, voli leying the ball to remote corners, genrrally to his opponents’ right, and won [tho next three games. ; Both players changed their style in ■ the last set, trying for net shots. [Hawkes only won the second game. The scores in the match were <l—4, G—l, 6—l in favor of Lowe.

The next match was between Anderson (Australasia) and Woosnam (England). Anderson, who started weakly in (he first set, wing unable to accommodate himself to Woosnam’s fast service, warmed up rapidly, but then became erratic and Woosnam won the last five games. Anderson won the sec ond set easily. In the fourth set he won ihe first two games and lost the third by double-faulting, but retrieved him self in the last two games. By defeating Canada, Autralasia qualified to play the British Isles in the second round of the Davis Cup contest. India has already defeated France in the second round, Belgium has forfeited Io Japan, and Argentina has forfeited to Denmark. On• one semi-final wilUbe played, between Japan and India, Denmark having withdrawn from the contest. The l final to decide the team to meet the United States in the challenge round for the cup will he played between Britain or Australasia (the winner of the match now in progress), and Japan or India. The match between Australasia and England will be decided by the best four singles and one doubles.
