DUKES ARE POORER.
SEEKING HUMBLER HOMES.
SELLING ANCESTRAL ESTATES.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 5, 5.5 p.m. London, August 5.
The Duke of Portland, addressing his tenants, prophesied the wholesale closure of many historic homes in England, ns, owing to their inability to maintain them, their owners are seeking humbler homes. The Duke said he was certain his successors would be unable to live at Welbeck Abbey. Since the armistice more 1 than a score of great titled landowners have been forced to sell a portion of their ancestral acres, including the Duke of Sutherland and the Duke of Westminster. Hundreds of thousands of acres, worth millions, have changed hands, mainly owing to the economic situa-tion.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
