THE ESCAPE OF MATTHEWS,. HOW HE GOT AWAY. By Telegraph.—Freis Association. Dunedin, 5. ' Matthews, the Timaru murderer, who was committed to Seacliff, escaped early this morning. Particulars are not yet available. Dunedin, Last Night. Matthews escaped at 1.30 a.m. by tearing up the boarding of the floor of his cell and escaping into a cellar, thence gaining the grounds. A large body of police and detectives were despatched to search at daylight. Matthews was attired only in a singlet and underpants*
