RAILWAY BLOCKED.
SLIP NEAR WELLINGTON AN ENGINE BURIED. By Tdegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Avgust 5. A mishap occurred to the train which left Thorndon at 5.10 last night for Johnsonville. Half-way between Ngaio ’ and Khandallah a landslip of considerable magnitude fell on the leading engine of the train, which was being towed up the hili by two engines. The leading engine was buried in soggy earth softened by the heavy rains. The smokebox anil bogie were derailed. Fortunately neither the engine-driver nor the fireman was injured. A wreckage gang was dispatched immediately. Passengers by the express from Napier and New Plymouth were transhipped at the slip, and with their luggage brought, on to Thorndon by special trains. Both trains were about two hours late in arriving.
The wreckage gang succeeded in ex, tricating the buried engine, which was virtually undamaged. The slip was cleared for passing trains before midnight. The main trunk express left immediately after the slip had been cleared.
