The following application from a young would-be footballer has been received by the Poneke Club: — “l would like to know if I can play Rugby footbalk next season for Poncke, seventh grade. Then my age will be eight years, and my weight is now 4st 21b, and wood like to play full-back. I allways tackle well. I have oiy mist too boys yhet.” Tlie Manawatu Rugby Union has suspended Cor life, W. Fenton, captain of the Kairanga team, for calling off his team because he disagreed with the ruling of tte referee, using bad language, hooting the referee, and threatening to fight an adversary. Writes a Patea man now resident in Sydney :—The Sydney Press stated that the Springboks would meet their first seriqus trial of strength when they got to Taranaki, and would have to be at their very best to win as this province was almost invincible on their own ground, having defeated BedellSivewrigkt’s team. If my memory serves me rightly Taranaki was tho only N.Z. team that beat an English touring team away back in the eighties, Hughie Good scored and was carried off the field shoulder high. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH. The primary schools’ match, North v. South Taranaki, will be played at New Plymouth on Saturday, August 13, as a curtain-raiser to the Hawera-Tukapa senior match. FIRST TEST MATCH. ASSEMBLING DOMINION TEAM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The North Island members of the New Zealand team for the first test match at Dunedin on Saturday week, together with the extra players chosen, will assemble in Wellington to-morrow to proceed south by to-morrow night’s steamer, the whole team to be in Dunedin on Saturday next to go into training. Mr. A. McDonald will be associated with Mr. W. J. Stead as coach for the team, and Mr. D. M. Stuart will be manager.
BELLIS, A GREAT FORWARD. It has been said by one critic that Bellis got into the New Zealand team on his reputation (says the Wanganui Chronicle). On his present form he is worth' his place in any All Black fifteen either in the pack or on the wing. If the other forwards prove as good as "Moko,” then the South Africans vyll have a hot time in the tests. Bellis, in the opinion of the News’ scribe, is undoubtedly a very fine player—weighty, dashing, resourceful, and tireless. Unquestionably he was the most prominent player on the ground last Thursday, playing back as an extra five-eight or pushing in with the forwards with equal facility and success. His one fault Is overeagerness, which frequently gets him into trouble. Probably he will cure himself of this when he plays In tte tests. On Thursday's form he is a champion, fully deserving of a place in New Zealand's elect.
