AMERICAN PROHIBITION PROBLEM. Washington, August 3. Despite national prohibition five million dollars’ worth of liquor was imported during the fiscal year ended June, including 195,000 gallons, mostly imported from Britain and two million gallons of wine from France. BRITISH LICENSING BILL. London, August 3. The House of Commons sat till 3.45 this morning and read the Licensing Bill a third time. It provides that public houses shall be open eight hours daily in the provinces and nine hours in London and five hours on Sundays. It permits drinking in restaurants till 12.30 and abolishes the bona fide traveller. BRITISH ECONOMY CAMPAIGN. London, August 3. Sir Robert Horne informed Mr. Clynes that the Cabinet had decided, in view of departmental replies to the Treasury “Economy” circular to appoint a select committee of business men to deal with reductions in expeixrfture. EMIGRATION OF EX-SERVICE MEN. J London, August 3. , Replying to a question in the House ’ of Commons, Colonel Amery said that i since the armistice the Government had sent ex-servicemen and their families, I numbering 54,145, overseas, of whom I 17.197 went to Australia and 9075 to New Zealand. The total expenditure was £1,038,000, which had been entirely borne by the Home Government. A FIELD-MARSHAL IN DANGER. London, August 3. During yacht racing at Cowes, FieldMarshal Sir Henry Wilson fell overboard from a yawl, but was able to keep afloat until rescued. | •
