A COLD SNAP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, August 4. Heavy snowfalls have occurred on the highlands, and the weather is the coldest for years. A BY-ELECTION. Brisbane, August 4. In the Maranoa by-election, to fill the vacancy in the Federal House caused through Mr. Page’s death, Mr. Hunter, the Country Party’s nominee has established an apparently unassailable lead over the Laborite. The Labor defeat is considered significant in conjunction frith the results of the late municipal elections. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WHEAT. Adelaide, August 4. The Premier announced that the Government intended to adhere to the wheat decision. The censure debate was adjourned. SPREAD OF TICK. Sydney, August 4. The spread of the tick pest in the north coast districts is causing serious alarm, as the dairying industry is menaced. The Under-Secretary for Agriculture after extended investigations states that £120,000 will be required for protective measures during the coming season. Half a million has been spent in the past 14 years in efforts to eradicate the tick. PARER’S BIG FLIGHT. < Melbourne, August 4. After travelling forty miles, Parer’s engines developed trouble. He landed safely and sent his companions away to obtain wood for overhauling purposes. While they were away, Parer started to overhaul the engine. A strong wind overbalanced him, and his legs and feeit were caught in the. revolving propeller. His big toe was broken and both feet were badly bruised. He is suffering severely from exposure. When his companions returned they removed him to the hospital. (Parer was starting a flight round Australia to raise funds for a transpacific effort.)
