DEATH OF CARUSO.
WORLD’S FINEST TENOR. ( UNEXPECTED ILLNESS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rome, August 2. The death has occurred at Naples of Signor Enrico Caruso, the famous tenor. Received August 3, 5.5 p.m. London, August 2. A Rome correspondent states that Caruso’s relapse was entirely unexpected. He went, a week ago to the famous sanctuary of Our Lady, Pompeii, giving a thanks* offering of £250 for recovery. He had been leading a most quiet life at Sorrento, where he was convalescing. He sang a few weeks ago, showing that his voice was not affected by his illness - Times Service.
Generally acknowledged to have been the finest tenor of the present day, Enrico Caruso began life as an engineer, with no thought of taking up'singing, and no special musical education. He made his first appearance in his native city, Naples, and his first notable success was in Travis ta in 1896. He later sang in many of the cities of Europe and America, signor Caruso reappeared at Covent Garden (London) in May, 1914, and received an enthusiastic welcome. He was married in 1918 to Miss Benjamin, daughter of Mr. Park Benjamin, patent lawyer, of New York. He was made a M.V.O. in 19G7. and was 45 years of age at the time of his death. Some time ago Caruso suffered from throat trouble. A coble from New York a few weeks ugo stated that had sailed for Ji -ly to recover from a malady.
