INGLEWOOD.
MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) July 30. The monthly session of the Magistrate’s Court at Inglewood was held on Friday, before Mr. C. R. Walker, S.M. The police proceeded against P. E. Chapman, aerated water manufacturer, on a charge of using saccharine in lieu of sugar, defendant pleading guilty. Defendant’s counsel explained the difficulty at the time of the alleged offence, that existed in the matter of obtaining sugar, for which saccharine had been substituted. A fine of £1 was imposed, with 19s 7d costs. J. Dobson, for driving a motor car over the Rata Street railway crossing in Inglewood when the line was not clear, was fined 10s and costs 17s. .R. Darlew, for riding a bicycle on a footpath in the borough, was fined 5s and costs 7s. In the two cases heard last Court day when the apiary inspector (Mr. H. W. Bill ing) prosecuted settlers for keeping bees in other than properly constructed hives, it was shown that the conditions then imposed had been complied with. Convictions were entered, and the cases dismissed. The members of the legal fraternity informally farewelied Mr. On - Walker, on his transfer to the Chief Justiceship of Samoa. CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT. The publicity given to the cribbage tournament which has lately been carried out by the Inglewood Cribbage, Association, has had the effect of stirring interjest in this favorite game. In the tourna- ■ ment the Fire Brigade team was top, but I amongst their opponents in the Foresters’, Bowlers* and Druids’ teams were also honorary members of the Fire Brigade. These cribbage enthusiasts challenged the active Fire Brigaders to a contest, which was played in the brigade's room on j Thursday last, and resulted in a win for j the honorary members by 34 games to 26. The results were as follows, the honorary members being mentioned first in each case: A. A. Leslie and W. H. Eagar, 10, v.
S. Lovell and G. Lindsay, 6; M. Burns and H: Clough, 7, v. J. Hook and T. Lindsay, 6; H. Luke and E. Henderson, 7, v. McClaggan and Gillies, 10; H. Manby and F. Spurdie, 10, v. Devereaux and E. Crossman, 4. It should be stated- that the team of active members was personally the same that won the competition between the clubs—the Inglewood Cribbage Shield. GENERAL. There will be many residents of Inglewood who will. learn with regret that Mr. R. W. R. Woodir.g (Dick-Wooding) died on Wednesday, July 20, at Otaki, from the result of injuries received in a fall from a tree, which he was lopping when his ladder slipped.
