A great deal of interest has been manifested in Stratford in the masquerade and fancy dress ball organised by Mrs. McBeth, and the function, which took place in the Town Hall last night, attracted a crowded attendance. The dancing floor was crowded, and there was also a large number of onlookers present. There were many striking costumes, ranging from the dainty to the grotesque, and the grand march was a spectacular procession. Prizes were awarded as follows: Ladies’ fancy dress, Miss E. Milner (Spanish Dancing Girl) ; men's fancy dress, Mr. Crawford (Old English Gentleman); ladies’ most original costume, Miss D. Beere (French Pierrot); men's most original costume, R. ( Burns (Starvation); special prize, Mr. B. , Vincent (Scarecrow). The music for the first half of the programme was supplied by Misses Rudkin and Armstrong, and for the second ha’f by Fox’s orchestra. Mr. McMeekan, of Midhirst, had charge of the catering, and the M.C.’s were Messrs. D. Clarke and W. Wilson. CHILDREN ON ROADS. The schoolchildren of Stratford have a very bad habit of playing about on the roads on their journeys to and from school, and their games have caused apprehension to motorists using the roads. The children are stated to have had several narrow escapes lately from being run over, and it is time that steps were taken to stop them from playing on the roads. Their negligence in failing to observe approaching \ehicles and to get out of the way is a cause of great apprehension to motorists. The nuisance is* stated to be greatest on Broadway North, and motorists have predicted an accident on that thoroughfare if the children are allov d to play about the roads. It seems that t the be»t w’ay to warn the children woura be through their school teachers, who would have much more chance of pointing out to them the dangers from passing traffic than anyone else. A lecture on traffic dangers, followed by an essay from the children on the same subject, might help to fix in their minds the risk they run. OBITUARY. The death occurred at New Plymouth last evening of Mr. T. Roberts, who was for many years a resident of Stratford, and was employed here as borough overseer to the i jDcil. He was well respected throughout the district, and after the accident by which he was crushed by a fall of earth and lost his sight he earned the admiration of all who came in contact with him by the great fortitude and courage he showed by becoming skilled in basket-making and continuing to face life cheerfully, despite Lis misfortunes. He recently suffered a great bereavement in : i the death of his wife, who left an infant ! daughter. A few weeks ago Mr. Roberts I removed to Nev,’ Plymouth, where he con 1 tracted blood-poisoning and was removed j to the New Plymouth hospital.
