OUR HARBOR.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —On viewing the port the other day, I saw the "Kia Ora” lying at the old wharf, apparently very' snugly, although almost storm conditions prevailed outside. This is very satisfactory as far as it goes, but I could see no signs of any commencement of additional berthage, al the ugh it is common knowledge that vessels are being turned away from the port and much trade diverted and more lost for want of another berth. Soino years have gone by since the ratepayers were enduaed to sanction a loan of £300,000 for general harbor improvement, Including more wharfage accommodation necessary to meet the growing trade of the port. It is very disappointing after all this time. not. to see the slightest attempt being made in this direction, and naturally misgivings arise in our mind as to the future. Kow Is the board going to meet Interest charges etc., if it drives trade away? And how long are they going to continue driving trade away, or, in other words, how long will it be before another wharf is built? How old is the present wharf and liow long will it last or remain sufficiently strong to berth ev.en the solitary large boat? Just what are the advocates of the "outer harbor" looking for—ia it a pit in which to bury tire £300,000? — I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
