WATERFRONT LABOR.
FARMERS DISCUSS PROBLEMS. PLEA FOR AN INQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press A ssoeUUtm. Wellington, Last Night. At the Dominion Farmers’ Union con* ference to-day, Captain Colbeck moved, that in view of the great importance ta the public and the industries of the Dominion of efficient control of the working of the waterfront industry it be an earnest recommendation to “the Government that they should institute an early and exhaustive inquiry into the whole matter of cargo handling at the various ports. Captain Colbeck said that under the present system great waste resulted and a better system was needed. Mr. C. K. Wilson thought <he contract system was worthy of consideration. He mentioned that Sydney had a system which worked so well that there had been no strike for four years. Mr. T. Moss said the scheme of permanent labor, which had been commenced on the Wellington waterfront, was so far working satisfactorily. The motion was carried. A motion that the Dominion executive confer with the Government in evolving a scheme for better control of waterfront labor was also carried.
