Pimental was found not guilty and discharged. [A previous cable from Melbourne dated April 18 stated: Morton Palmer Pimental, managing director of the Federated Films, Ltd., has been arrested on a charge of maliciously setting fire to Numan’s Buildings, with intent to defraud.] LABOR AND LOCAL ELECTIONS. Brisbane, July 26. Later returns show that Labor suffered a crushing defeat at the municipal elections. Anti-Laborites captured approximately 500 seats to 30 secured by Laborites in all the cities. In the larger towns every Lahorite candidate was defeated and, where they were successful in the smaller boroughs, it was only by’ the narrowest majorities. The Premier, commenting, attributed the defeat to the apathy of Laborites as a whole. They evidently thought the pettifogging affairs of local government could safely be left in the hands of Tory politicians.
The Nationalist leader claims that the result is practically a vote of no confidence in the Government.
