(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 26. It was reported • that diphtheria had .broken out at. the Manakorihi Maori pah, and that two cases had, been isolated. Mr. j Westerman, rhe local health inspector, on . making investigations, could get. no inj formation on the matter. The local docI tors also have not been notified of any cases. Mr. Westerman speaks highly of | the sanitary arrangements, of the pah. i A good deal of interest has been taken i this winter in the card games held under ■ the auspices of the Waitara Card Asso- ; ciation. The civilians’ team has been • successful all through. They ftvith six games) met the Foresters’ team (with 5 games), the Foresters proving victors. This makes both teams level. The championship for the cup will be played off next week. It is anticipated that the association will be on a larger scale next winter, and will embrace country teams. Accommodation will have “to be found for the playing members, although the Fire Brigade deserve a good deal of thanks for the use of their room this year gratis. In McLean Street on Thursday last a demonstration was given of Kor-ker. Mr. Hall, a local motorist, allowed the wheels jof his car to run over a board studden jwilh three-inch nails, and yet the air pressure remained. Not satisfied with this, a three-inch nail was driven into the tyre, also a gimlet, and the tube did not slacken. The process is said to be entirely mechanical, the operation of mending being brought aboi|,t by the pressure within the tyre acting behind the material*
