A Melbourne cable reports the death of Mr. Howard Vernon, the actor, A further improvement in the condition of Mr. T. B. Williams, Mayor of Wanganui, is reported. Mr. E. A. Gooder, the well-known Masterton architect, is leaving shortly to reside in New Plymouth Major William Richard Foley, M.C., has been transferred from the Reserve of Officers to the Wellington West Coast Mounted Riffes, with the rank of major.

Mr. G. A. Harkness, senior inspector of schools in the Nelson district, is retiring on superannuation after twenty eight years’ service (says a Press telegrajn from Nelson). He is believed to be the senior inspector of the Dominion.

The members of the Taranaki Jockey Club, at the annual meeting last night, passed a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. W. L. Newman who was one of the oldest members of the club, having been an official for very many years.

A cabie from London says Mr. W. M. Hughes and Mr. W. F. Massey both propose leaving England about August 24. Mr. Massey catches the Niagara, arri\ ing for the opening of the Dominion Parliament.

Lord Northcliffe. principal proprietor of The Times, is expected to reach Auckland on or about August 28, and will be there only for one day, as he will proceed to Australia in the steamer which brings him. Sir Francis Bell will go to Auckland to meet Lord Northcliffe.

The death is reported of Mrs. David Spence, at one time a resident of Hawera and Normanby. She had resided in the district for over 30 years, anQ was held in high esteem by those with whom she came in contact. Her husband predeceased her but a short time ago.

The many friends of Mr. Harry Peters, of Kaimiro, will regret to learn of the death of his wife, which occurred at Inglewood yesterday morning. As one of the earliest settlers at the top end of the Egmont Road and for some years guide in charge of the old mountain house, Mr. Peters has a very wide circle of friends who will sympathise with him in his bereavement.
