MEMORIAL SERVICE.

THE LATE MRS. A. R. ATKINSON.

There was a very large attendance on Sunday night in the Whiteley Memoria,! Chunch, New Plymouth, in connection with the memorial service to Mrs. A. R. Atkinson.

The Rev. A. H. Collins, who presided, spoke of the graciousness and greatneaseof the departed worker and called upon those present to take up the work that had been laid down.

After the singing of “When all the flints who find their labor’s rest,” Mrs. Martin, of Fitzroy, paid a well deserved tribute to the deceased lady. She told of her work amongst the women and children of this country and of the magnificent way in which she had rendered service to the great cause of prohibition.

Mr. Grinstead, of Palmerston North, spoke as one who for many years had been a privileged associate with Mrs. Atkinson in her labors amongst the children. The women of New Zealand led by sutfh glorious women as the late president of the S.P.C.C., he said, were determined that the cry of the children of New Zealand should be heard. After detailing a few instances from reports from police court proceedings, the speaker went on to say that he did not for one moment suggest that all child suffering was due to drink. During the meeting a tribute read from Mi's. Griffin, the president of the W/C.T. Union. At the close of the service the Rev. Mr. Collins moved the following resolution, which was carried, the congregation standing:—“That this meeting of the representatives of the churches of New Plymouth express their ■profound sorrow at the death of Mrs. A. R. Atkinson. We gratefully recall the •distinguished services of our departed sister friend through many years and commend to the God of all comfort and consolation the sorrowing husband and other relatives of the family.” Tie service was closed in prayer by the Rev Mr. Martin.
