The death is reported from Wellington of Mr. F. W. Mansfield, formerly Regis-trar-General.
Dr. Hutson has resigned his position as medical superintendent of the Wanganui Hospital. The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. T. Harle Giles, returns to Auckland by the Rarawa to-night.
A Dunedin message reports the sudden death of Mrs. E. A. Axelson, wife of the Rev. Mr. Axelson, superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association. The cause was brain hemorrhage.
The death of Captain Russell Jaggard, of the New Zealand Shipping Company,is mentioned in an exchange. Captain Jaggard had many friends in New Zealand, having been on the New Zealand “run” for over twenty years. The funeral of the late Mr. W. E. Percival, of Inglewood, took place at Inglewood yesterday, and was attended by a large number of friends representing all parts of Taranaki. The mayors of neighboring towns attended.
Mr. W. z Uru, M.P., is the heaviest member of the House, weighing not less than 22st. Next in weight comes the member for Northern Maori, Mr. T. Henare, with 20st. The average weight of members of the Lower Chamber is 13st. 71b.
The death has occurred at the age of 78, of Mr. R. L. Mestayer, the wellknown civil engineer. He wq.s at one period drainage engineer for the city of Wellington, and was consulting engineer for many local bodies. On water supply and drainage works he was a recognised authority. At the annual meeting of suppliers to the Midhirst Dairy Co. yesterday a resolution was passed expressing regret at the death of Mr. W. E. Percival, of Inglewood, and placing on record appreciation of the services rendered by him to the dairying industry in Taranaki, and also extending the sympathy of the suppliers to his relatives.
On the eve of the transference of Guard Lash from Wanganui to New Plymouth, where he has been promoted to the position of coaching foreman, he was the recipient of a presentation from his fellow-members of the Wanganui station staff. The presentation, which took the form of a set of carvers, was made by Mr, C. F. Day, stationmaster, who referred to the ' recipient’s many good qualities and wished him success in his new sphere. Messrs. A. Small (guards), F. Dillon (shunters), E. Liddle (porters), and E. Dashfield (casuals) also spoke. Mr. Lash suitably acknowledged the gift.—Wanganui Herald.

Lieut. Fraser (Dunedin); bar to the Military Cross, Lieut. Herbert (Kelso), Captain McHugh (Oamaru); Military Cross, Captain Emery, Lieut. Todd, Second-Lieutenants Wilson, Marger, Ivcrach (Dunedin). .Johnston (Invercargill), McAdam (Queenstown); service medal, Order of St. John, Miss Mackersy (Dunedin).
The death took place at Hawera on Sunday of Mrs. H. Caple.n, who was one of the earliest of the town, having been there since 1882, when she and Mr. Caplen came to settle from the West Coast. Mrs. Caplen, as a child, went to Australia with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Dew, and later came to the West Coast of New Zealand. In 1878 she was married in Nelson, and about three years later she and Mr. Caplen. with their young family, came over to Hawera, by way of Waitara. Thenceforward she lived at Hawera until her death. She was al' her life a devoted worker in the Anglican Church. Mrs. Caplen is survived by her husband, two sons, and three daughters—Messrs. H. D. and N. H. C. Caplen, Miss Caplen. and Mrs. G. Hall (Stratford), and Mrs. W. D. Hamilton (Whangarei).—Star.
