ONAKAKA IRON COMPANY.
PROGRESS GF OPERATIONS. AIMS OF THE COMPANY. —" Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 22. The Minister of Mines has received some interesting information concerning the progress of operations at Onakaka iron and Steel Company for the manufacture of iron from New Zealand ore. The company, which proposes to make pig iron from limonite ore in the Parapara district acquired the blast furnaces and plant formerly erected at New Plymouth for smelting ironsand. This furnace is being enlarged and set up at Onakaka.
The iron ore is a surface deposit, and is brought to the furnace by an aerial tramway over a distance of a mile and a half. The top terminal of the aerial is cut into the limestone face on one side and into the iron ore on the other. This conjunction of required materials is stated to be unique. Experts estimated that the ore will not cost more than 21s per ton at the smelter. The company aims at producing up to 30 tons of pig iron a day, a quantity sufficient for New Zealand’s requirements.
