RACING FIXTURES. July 30—South Canterbury Hunt Steeples. July 28, 30—GUborpe It.C. Steeples. August 9, 11, 13—Canterbury J.C. Grand National. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) South Canterbury Hunt to-day. Grand National acceptances appear this morning. Strategy was withdrawn from the Winter Cup at 3.45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club will race on the Hawera course on August 31. If Silent Dick Is taken across to Gisborne he will be entrusted witfh a lot of Taranaki money. Luperino is not going south, and was scratched for all engagements at the Grand National aneeting on Wednesday. Died in Melbourne recently, Brlseis, by Achilles—Celeano. She was a good winner in sprints on the other side.

New Zealand subscribers to the 1922 A.J.C. Derby are: Messrs. T. H. Lowry 4, J. Goring Johnston 4, G. D. Greenwood 3, and B. L. Joll 3. The entrties total 489.

Auckland scribes do not favor Loyal Irish’s Derby prospects, but New Zealand never saw the best of him, and he is thought a lot more of in ’Stralia.

Hymarty has finished her racing career, and next season will he mated with King Mark. Though not. :: top-notcher Hymarty wa« speedy and paid her way on the turf. Mr. B. T. Bennett, who sustained a broken arm through “stopping” a kick by Legato, is reported to bo making a good recovery. Listowel looks as well as anything at present exercised on the Wanganui tracks, and should be worth keeping in mind for early spring engagements.

Mr. J. R. Corrigan, Hawera, is second in the list of winning owners in the trotting ranks this season, his total of £3574- 10s being made up as follows: Man o' War £1375. Overrate £560, Moneymaker £339 10s, Whisht £305, Xavier E‘2Bs, 'Biishchlkl £270, Rio Alio Itockawa.v £175, Hiram Galindo £l3o. and Aranui £l5. One of the heaviest, backed horses at Trenthain was Suate/ry, who carried nearly five thousand pounds on (lie foie in his two starts. How much was invested on the son of Alartian away from the course can only be guessed at,| but he must have been a great winner for the layers. Strategy’ is a great horse, but unfortunately for his owner (ho handicappers are aware, of it.

Good fields are carded for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting to-day. The principal steeplechase looks fairly open, but Manawaponga and Jack Symons will carry big money. Some Kid. Jock, Bellrock, Sembric, Cantoris and Tidal Wave should show up in the mloqr

The stakes given away by the Auckland Racing Club next season will probably run to close on £70,000, and It is not surprising that so many new men, tempted by the valu able prizes offered everywhere, are coming into the g*wno. of course we have to thank the totalisator for these phenomenal increases in stakes, and it. is not surprising that there is a strong movement in England -poor old conservative England!— to introduce the machine. When Insurrection won the Aloorefield Handicap on July 9 he was ridden by K. Tucker, who was recently riding in New Zealand. T-’lie Wellington horse started only third in order of favoritism, and won very easily. It is practically certain that Mr. J. W. Lowe threw in for a good win over the Kilbroney gelding’s success. Insurrection claims engagements ar Riccarton next month, •so possibly lie will be brought back to Now Zealand shortly.

Sir Fanciful cost his payly a tidy sum of money at. Trentham, but Ills failure is said to have been due ro. the heavy state of the going. If all we hear of the horse is correct he Is a top-hole hurdler, and hts Future efforts should be watched closely.

What's in a name? A horse named Stumbler won a. hurdle race at the V.R.C. winter meeting. Tiie well-known Hawera owner, Mr. J. R. Corrljan. has disposed of the following horses Hiram Galindo, to G. Haskins, Christchurch; Kingsland, to T. G. Fox, Christchurch; and Xavier, to A. Howard, Chaney's Corner. Mr. J. >Sbaw (Hawera) has sold Caterpillar to L. Berkett (Nelson). Talk about sports getting all over the country to race meetings! Why. yesterday cars went from all parts of Taranaki, and possibly from Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Wanganui, carrying people to Wellington io see the Springboks play there to-day. Motoring at this time of the year is anything but a pleasure jaunt, but an Inglewood sport who went down hy oar itiforawi ute wtiwt that the

chief objection to the train was that it went by so many pubs—'without stopping I Trust Inglewood "boys” to stir things up when they get going! It is not often that father and son ride winners on the same day, and at the same meeting, but Frank Bullock and his son, F. L. Bullock, perfonmed this feat at Hurst Park (England) on May 17. Young Bullock scored his first victory, winning cleverly on Jack O'Lantern from Gap, ridden by the crack horseman, S. Donohue. Later in t|ie afternoon Frank Bullock won the Whitsuntide Plate on Goldendale. Sydney papers cast doubts on the statement that Mr. Geo. Currie paid 6000 guineas for his new sire Limond (Desmond—Linda!l. It Is pointed out that Limond was not a really high-class performer, and has yet lo make a name at the stud. However, lie lack* nothing as regards breeding, and should get good opportunities to prove himself at Koatanui.
