Bowring, of Christchurch, has presented the Victoria League with a portrait of the Dowager Countess Jersey, which he painted, in recognition of the league’s kindness to overseas visitors. In the House of Commons an amendment to the Finance Bill to relieve Cooperative Societies of the Corporation profits tax was proposed, and the Government was defeated by 137 votes to 135. The Government will not attempt to re-commit the Bill in order to restore the rejected clause. This means that co-operative societies will be exempt from the corporation tax.
