FEDERAL POLITICS.

FINANCIAL POSITION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, July 21. In the House of Representatives bir ■Joseph Cook, when askipg for two months’ supply (£4,903,000), stated that the actual surplus was £6,031,000, £5,750,000 having been brought forward from the previous year. The national debt was £331,595,000. Mr. Ryan moved an amendment providing that the Government should take steps to ensure the continuance of the wheat pool. This was defeated by 26 to 13, the Country Party voting with the Government. Mr. Gregory subsequently announced that, in view of the truce, they could not do otherwise, but later he would move a motion dealing with the wheat question. Sir Joseph Cook read a cablegram from Mr. W. M. Hughes stating that it would be unwise to disclose the business of the Conference at this stage, but he reiterated that anything agreed to by him would not be final unless ratified by Parliament. In the Senate opposition towards the Tariff Board Bill is brewing. The second reading was carried by 11 votes to 10.
