ACTION BY WELLINGTON BOARD. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington* July 21. Provision for adopting the “Nelson system” of religious instruction in schools was made by the Wellington Education Board, which had before it the following report from the executive committee: —“That in order to afford an opportunity of religious instruction to children of those schools the committees of which are prepared to grant permission under proper conditions, a proviso be added after the word daily in By-law IS, which reads, ‘Teachers shall give instruction for five hours daily during five ddya in each week, except in infant schools and infant classes, in which teaching may be for four hours daily. There must not be less than an hour’s interval between morning and afternoon school and no detention of scholars shall in any way reduce this interval.’ The proviso is to read- “Provided that, where arrangements approved by the school committee of a district are made for imparting religious instruction, then on one day in the week the number of hours of secular instruction may be reduced to 4j.” The report was adopted, one member dissenting.
