TARANAKI B V. OHURA. VICTORY FOR TARANAKI. Thera was an attendance of about 600 spectators at EHhaim yesterday to witness the representative match between the Ohura team and the Taranaki B representatives, which was won by Taranaki by 6 points to nil. The weather was decidedly wintry, a cold wind blowing across the ground, whilst half-way through the first spell rain fell and made the ground greasy and the ball difficult to handle. The game was not a brilliant exhibition of Rugby, but was interesting, and was keenly fought throughout. In the first spell tooth teams made the game open, and play was very even, the spell ending with no score. In the second spell Taranaki backs threw the ball about, and considering the ball w«ts greasy, they handled it well, scoring two tries. Ohura, on the other hand, kept the game close, relying on their forwards, who carried out some solid rushes, and towards the conclusion of the game were having the better of things and narrowly missed scoring on one ot two occasion#. There wero a good number of infringements during the game, Taranaki being tie principal offenders. The gamo, though played in a most friendly spirit, was a hard one, and there were several minor casualties. Early In the game Fuller retired, McCullough (Stratford), tafcfng place, whilst in the second spell Boswell (Ohura.) had to retire, H, Robinson taking his place. The Ohura team comprised:—Full-back, Goodall; three-quartets, Freeman, Brennan (captain), Bartholomew; five-eighths, Robinson, Pelbles; half, Cole; rover, England; forwards, Jones, Brown, Young, Graham, Kouri, Westlake, Boswell. The Taranaki team, which was captained by Lusk, was us picked, save that Lypskey was replaced by McClymont. THE FIRST SPELL.

Taranaki opened against tha wind, and right from the start Berg got his backs moving, but Brennan intercepted ft pass, and later Wilkinson was well taken by Freeman. Further passing bouts were spoilt by faulty handling, and then good kicks by Brannan and Bartholomew put Ohura in a handy position, Robinson being collared. Fuller was here injured and replaced by McCullough. Brennan had a shot from a free kick, the ball falling short. Ohura kept pressing, and from a scrum on the line Robinson cut in and passed to Pelbles, who failed to tahe, a free kick giving relief. The next few minutes were devoted to forward rushes, Boswell. Westlake and Rdblnson being prominent, and then Hart picked up and kicked across to Lusk, who cleared. Taranaki backs got moving again, the ball beings kicked across; Hart just failed t<> pick up, and i Bartholomew cleared. Berg set his backs) going, using both wings In succession, but j faulty taking checked both movements when tte? were looking dangerous. Ohura forwards caune again and smothered Lusk, but Dunford proved safe, particularly when Bartholomew followed up a high kick. The spell ended: — Taranaki 0 Ohura 0 THE SECOND SPELL. Taranaki backs attacked on resuming, and a bout by Berg, McClymont, Lusk and Wilkinson saw the latter collared by Freeman. J Then Ohura forwards retaliated, compelling j Dunford to line. After further pressure, in : which England and Pelbles were prominent, I

O’Rourke camo through, and from the loose near Ohtira’s iwenty-five, Berg made a great opening and pusfled to Lusk, who handed on to WllldnsoE, and the latter streaked, and beating the opposition, scored under the posts. Lusk’s shot at goal fell short. Taranaki 3 Ohura 0 Bartholomew was responsible for a good line kick, but Taranaki came back again, Wilkinson being collared. McKay made some good openings, but infringements gave Ohura relief, whilst their tackling also was solid, Wilkinson on the One wlhg and Hart on the other being collared when close to scoring by Good All and Bartholomew respectively. Then McCullough made a great opening, and the ball travelled via all the, backs to Lusk, who cut in and passed to Wilkinson, but the latter could not hold, a force resulting. Again Hart made a pretty move, handing to Lusk again when blocked, the latter being collared. The Ohura pack cleared, but Dunford kept thefrt back with well Judged kicks. Brennan then intercepted a pass and carried play to the twenty-five, where Dunford lined. Play then hbvered In mid-field until Taranaki backs again got. tfie upper hand, and from an opening by McCullough, Lusk was nearly over. A moment later the ball came to Berg, to Dlunmock, to McClymont, who touched down near the posts. Lusk failed to goal* Taranaki 6 Ohura 0 Ohura now rushed to Taranaki's territory, where from a free kick BrenAgn had a pot at goal, which failed, the ball being forced. Coulton, Norgate and McCullough were prominent In taking play to raid-field, where it hung until Bartholomew marked from a pass forward, and following up fast, rushed the bail over the line, Dunford Just beating Robinson for the ball. Again from a free kick Graham had a shot for Ohura, the ball falling short. Ohura had the better of the resulting play, but Were unable to score. Brennan had another unsuccessful shot at goal from a free kick, the ball being forced. Mr. F. Julian refereed. STRATFORD JUNIORS v. HIGH SCHOOL.

Masterton, July 20. Mr. T. B. Pienaar, captain of the Springboks, was asked by a Dominion representative what his opinion was of to-day's game. He said his team had played a scrappy game. There were very few concerted movement, though occasional flashes of snappy play were witnessed, noticeably some of the tries scored. On the whole the South Africans played a slack game. "Our men are very good at spoiling tactics," he said. "Of course we were a good deal heavier in the forwards, and so were successful in the scrums.” Asked what he thought of the New Zealand formation, Mr. Pienaar said he did not like tho wing-forwar/ because ho was the '•ause of a lot of off-sldc play, and spoilt the spectacular part of the game by blocking ! u lot of promising back movements. He would i not express an opinion as to the comparative merits of the two formations. The greater weight of the Africans always told In the scrum. In conclusion, Mr. Pienaar said te would like to pay a tribute to the temper of the crowd. They were most impartial and sporting. Mr. G, H. Bennett, manager of the visiting team, said that in his opinion the team had not struck form, and would require to show their real capabilities in future matches. Commenting on the game, he said: "There was too much touch. The ball was being kicked into touch all the time."

Speaking at Masterton on Tuesday, the I manager of the Springbok football team said; "We have received very serious warnings to the effect that we are going to lose the teat matches. I have doubts myself. But I would like to make this clear: New Zealand has got to go all out to beat us.” On Wednesday at the Hawera A. and P. Show Grounds, a return match was played between Patea Rovers and Hawera Technical High School. The ground and ball were very slippery, but a clean and keen contest was witnessed. Patea proved the winners bv eight points (two tries, one of which wm converted) to six (two tries).

i Eltham folk will all join in congratulating j tho Progress Committee on tho success that j has attended thbir efforts to obtain & rep. | football fixture for Eltham (says the Argus). • After a lapse of nearly twenty years, Tau- | mata Park Is once more to be the venue of i a rep. game, and may, before the conclusion of the season, also see an inter-provincial contest fought out. As has been often pointed out, Eltham has the most central situation of any town in Taranaki, the railway timetable Is most convenient, better roads are not to be found in the Dominion, and the ground is also one of the best and most conveniently situated in Taranaki. With all this : in its favor there was no apparent reason ; why a rep. match should not occasionally txi played in Eltham, and the Taranaki Rugby Union’s changed attitude towards the town will give all local "sports’’ renewed confidence in that body. % ASSOCIATION. NEW PLYMOUTH v. HAWERA. To-morrow representatives of the Now Plymouth Club will play a Hawera eleven on the Taranaki A. and p. grounds at New Plymouth, the match commencing at 2 o’clock, i Admission to the game will be free, and it .
