FARMERS’ PROBLEMS.
THE MEAT EXPORT TRADE. PRODUCERS’ SHIPPING LINE. By Telegraph —Brew Association. Wellington, Last Night. The eighteenth annual conference of affiliated Agricultural and Pastoral Associations and Breeders’ Societies opened to-day. Mr. G. D. Marshall (Marton), waa elected president for the ensuing year. It was decided that the attention of freezing companies he drawn to the fact that 100 large a quantity of badly dressed meat was exported, to the detriment of New Zealand’s reputation, companies to be requested to‘ remedy iho matter. Another remit carried expressed thfr opinion of the conference that the work of agricultural instruction should be oon-% aiderably extended, and requested the Board of Agriculture should look into the matter and make recumiae&«> dations to the department on the ject. Dr. Reakes (Director of Agriculture) intimated that he was contemplating an increase in that branch of the department’s staff. Another remit urged consideration ot the establishment of a shipping line controlled by the producers, ajid after a discussion in committee a reaoiufclon to this effect was carried. Other remits carried were: That a®M effort be made to organise the frotenc meat industry in New Zealand on coi operative lines, Iwith one co-operativtf selling agency for meat; that it is est sential in the interests of farm produce tion that a soil survey of New Zealand! be carried out, and failing a survey oft the whole Dominion a start be made with districts where the Agricultural Department already has considerable data; that the question of a championship show be again approved, and that the. executive, in conjunction with the» Board of Agriculture, endeavor to ar--1 range for an annual championship sihow; I to be held in A’ew Zealand as soon m possible, and to secure Government cooperation; that the time has arrived when the Council of Agriculture should take in hand the allocation of show daves to the different associations ofj (he Dominion. z » A resolution was also carried advocating that agricultural show be exempt from local bodies’ taxation.
