VALUE OF DIRECT SERVICES. PROPOSALS HANGING FIRE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received July 20, 8 15’ p.m. London, July 19. The wireless proposals before the Premiers’ Conference are hanging fire. Mr. Hughes is strenuously opposing the. Norman scheme, which provides only a small radius, preventing direct communication even with Canada, America or the Far East. It is true it will be possible to near from anywhere, but it Will not be possible to transmit anywhere. Mr. Hughes contends that the essence of propaganda is getting fresh news and views before the world at the earliest moment;; it is no use simply listening to what others have to pay. Wireless, to be of any use to Australia, must be able to speak anywhere direct, accurately and uninterruptedly. Australia will not be satisfied with anything short of this ideal. Local views on the Empire’s and the world's affairs are often likely to have great influence if delivered promptly. Departmental experts and officials favor the Norman scheme, accentuating the cost, unreliability and difficulties of direct communication; yet the wireless companies, and also Marconi, support Mr. Hughes, contending that anything except, a direct service .is obsolete.—Aus.N.Z.
