SMUGGLING OPIUM.

A FINE OF £250 Bi-' Pelegriph Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A Dane named Jens Sorenson was fined at the Magistrate’s Court to-day £250, in default six months’ imprisonment with hard labor, un a charge of having opium in his possession in a form suitable for smoking. Accused is a greaser cn the steamer Moeraki and on arrival of the vessel last trip searcherg visited his quarters and secured a quantity of opium in the pockets of a. coat hanging behind the door. The defence was that the eoat did not belong to accused, but the fireman left the ship some months ago.
