The Prince of Wales is recovering from his chill and proceeds to Brighton to recuperate (says a cable from London).

The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs. Sarah Broadmore, of Dudley Road, Inglewood, relict of Mr. Fred A. Broadmora The late Mrs. Broadmore, who was 73 years of age, was an old resident of the district.

Among those present at the football match at New Plymouh on Saturday were the Hon. Dr. Pomare (a member of the Executive representing the Native race), Messrs. O. Hawken (M.P. for Egmont) and R. Masters (M.P; -for Stratford;. Mr. C. G. Alford, chief inspector of the Bank of New South Wales, has been appointed acting-general manager, owing to the death of Sir John R. French. Mr. Alford entered the service of the bank on his fourteenth birthday, and he has been on the staff of the institiltion nearly sixty year®. Lord Northcliffe has sailed for America, en route to Australia (says a cable from London). He arrives at Auckland on August 26 and at Sydney on August 31. He remains there for three weeks and afterwards goes to Japan. Lord Northcliffe states he desires to investigate the opportunities offered in Australia for immigration and the in-j vestment of capital.

On Saturday evening the members of the New Plymouth Masonic Lodges met and welcomed Wor. Bro. Morris, who is with the Springboks. There was an attendance of about 100, including many visitors from other parts of the province, and the proceedings, which were informal, were presided over by Right Wor. Bro. Ewing, P.G.M. The visitor delivered a very interesting address on matters affecting South Africa, after which an adjournment was made to the refectory, where refreshments were partaken of and musical items given.

The death occurred at New Plymouth on Saturday of Mrs. Margaret Besley, mother of Mr. W. H. Besley, of New Plymouth. The late Mrs. Besley, who was horn at Nelson, was in her 67th year. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. \ an, were, among the early settlers in the Nelson district. The late Mrs. Besley came to Taranaki about 12 years ago. She had been an invalid for a number of vears, but, in spite of all suffering, retained a cheerful and kindly disposition, which had endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. Deceased is survived hy three daughters and one son: Mrs. B. T. Armstrong (Wellington). Mrs F. Gibbons (Nelson), Miss A. Besley and Mr. W. H. Besley (New Plymouth).
