WATER SUPPLY.

SMALL PIPES TO BE REPLACED. A LOAN OF £lO,OOO. Referring to the waterworks loan of £lO,OOO, the general manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer), in his report to the New Plymouth Borough Council, states: The raising of thia loan, which the State Advances Office has promised to take up, will enable the council to remove to some extent the great danger of fire which exists in some parts of the borough now served by small pipes useless for fire prevention purposes. The small pipe»s when replaced by the larger mains will be available for use in other parts of the borough more sparsely populated. This will help to remove a very real hardship imposed upon applicants for water service, who, owing to funds not being available for water extensions are compelled to contribute the greater proportion of the cost of extending mains. It will, of course, be necessary to take a poll of the ratepayers, and it will be some little time before all preliminaries are completed and the money is available. It must be remembered also that even after the poll has been taken the pipes will have to be ordered and time allowed for delivery. It will therefore be some months before any relief from the present position can be expected.
