W.C.T.U.
MEETING OF BOARD. A meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board was held yesterday afternoon at the Soldiers’ Club, Present: Mrs. E. A. Walker (president), Mesdames Alexander, A. Ambury, W. Ambury, List, Mills, MacDiarmid, Skinner, Weston, Misses Harrison and Hodder. Letters were read from Messrs. White, McLeod, Hugh Baily, Weston and List accepting nomination as members of the Advisory Board. Mr. W. H. Skinner wrote asking to be excused from taking office, thus allowing one of the business men of the town directly interested in the safe accommodation and oversight of his employees to take his place. He congratulated the local executive of the Y.W.C.A. on the successful result of the very hard work and splendid organisation put into the recent collecting campaign.
The secretary of the Plunket Society wrote stating that the rest room in connection with their offices in Brougham Street is not a public rest room, but one to be used by mothers and babies only.
A letter was read from Miss Birch recommending Miss Scrivens as house attendant, of whom she writes: “Miss Scrivens is a fine association-spirited girl, who has been managing one of our smaller cafeterias here, is an excellent cook, a reliable worker, and has a very genial presence amongst girls. Miss Birich also refers to advertising, and says that the field committee are trying to inaugurate a plan whereby all the larger associations will advertise the hostel, which will help to make the Clarke Memorial Hostel known from north to south of the Dominion. With regard to the finance campaign held in June, she states it was decided at the last conference, when representatives met from the different boards of all the associations in New Zealand, that an effort which raised £5OO should pay at the rate of 10 per cent., one that raised £lOOO 5 per cent., and one that raised £5OOO at the rate of 2A per cent.
Mrs. MacDiamid (treasurer), delivered a financial statement showing £953 in hand as a result of the campaign, and a further outstanding sum of about £5O in promises, also the proceeds of a picture show, a euchre party and dance at Urenui, and a probable football match. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £73, of which £42 is for beds for the hostel, £7 for office books and stationery for the association’s business, and the remainder for campaign expenses. A vote of thanks was accorded the local Press for their generosity in advertising the various entertainments in aid of the Y.W.C.A. It was decided to have cards printed advertising the hostel, and giving the scale of charges, to be distributed among the business houses in New Plymouth and the district. Tenders for extra chests of drawers for the hostel were received, that of Messrs. Baker and Son’s being accepted. It was resolved to write to the secretary of the field committee to ask if Miss Scrivner would accept the position of house attendant at the hostel.
