For the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting there was good weather; the course was soft. The totallsator handled £6.3,976, as against £68,489 on the opening day last year. Won by two lengths and a half. Time, Imin. 35sec. NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Special Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. The meeting opened with the Steeplechasers’ Flat Handicap, which was run over a two and a quarter mile course. Luperino was the only scratching. As was expected, a slow pace was set. Mattock and Coalition led at the start, with Omahu several lengths back, and First Line last. Going out of the straight, on the completion of the first mile. Mattock took the lead. The field closed vp a little on the back stretch, and half a mile from home Coalition was alongside Mattock. Coalition was first into the straight with Omahu moving up, tut both Mattock and Omahu were being heeled along. Coalition came away in the straight and won by six lengths from Omahu, who was half a length ahead of Master Strowan. Next came Mattock and OakIclgh, and First Line was last.
Over a score of horses paraded for the Stewards’ Handicap, the principal six furlong event of the meeting. There was no delay at the harrier, and the big field was sent away to a fine start. The field ran In wnat appeared to be a fairly good line for two furlongs, when Tari and Prince Martian showed out in front. A furlong later Tari had a decided advantage of the rest of the field. He was first to turn for home, and below the distance Prince Martian sot out after him. Ruddy got out of the ruck, and Mustard Pot was in a good position, out nothing had a chance with Tari, who won by four lengths from Prince Martian, who was three lengths in front of Ruddy, and Probate was fourth.
In the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase a particularly good exhibition of jumping was given. John Bunny led over the first fence, with Golden Glade, Yankee Jack, and Kohinahtnn next. Going along the back Malahlni went to the front. Ho jumped beautifully, but rather big, and soon had a commanding lead. Classing the double in front of the sland Malahinl had charge from Yankee Jack, Sartoline and Kohinahina. Turning for the back stretch the second time, Silent Dick moved up fast. Malahiyt was tiring, and six f irlongs from home Silent Dick and Yankee Jack had charge. Silent Dick went away from the field, and in the run home was not troubled to win by twenty lengths from John Punny, who finished well, and comfortably accounted for Sartoline. Yankee Jack was fourth. Paddington Green fell at the fence seven furlofigs from home. Twenty-one contested the Trial Plate. When the field could be picked up, Rose of Athens and Meresanta were several lengths In advance of the rest. They turned for home in the lead, with Grotesque showing up among the next division. Meresanta tired In the run up the straight, and Rose of Athens went on alone. Just below the distance Emerson, who rode a nice race, sent Grotesque along, ana the Absurd colt soon settled the matter. He won well by a length and a half, while four lengths further back came Meresanta. Ditchley was fourth and Lord Martian and Illume were well up.
Demagogue, who was expected to run well, was withdrawn from the Vittoria Hurdles. Sweet Tipperary delayed the start awhile, hut a good release was effected. Kipling and Tigritiya led over the first fence, but passing the stand Hyttus took charge, and next to him were Kipling and Counter Attack. Hyttus was jumping splendidly, and going along the back stretch he put a good break on the field. Half a dozen lengths back came Te Oro at the head of the others, among which . Sweet Tipperary and Counter Attack were prominent. With five furlongs to go Diek set out in earnest after Hyttus, who st’Jl had a great lead. He had reduced the gap to about three 'lengths when they turned for home. Hyttus was first over the last fence about two lengths to the good. In a fine finish up the straight Hyttus won by a head. Te Oro was four lengths away third. Wild Pilgrim was fourth, Kipling fifth, and then ea-me Sir Agnes, Chummy, and Sweet Tipperary. Forest Gold was the only withdrawal from the Parliamentary Handicap, in which there were nineteen starters. When the Uz?rier rose Bonnie Maid and Rose Pink were cut out and tailed the field. Clean Sweep anu Kilgour were first to sl ow out. Kilgour was in charge going along the back, with Admiral Codrington lying handy, and Strategy well placed and going nicely. Three furlongs from home Strategy was pulling solidly, and when he ran into •'third position his chances looked rosy. On the home bend Arch Salute came to the front and was soon in charge. In the run up the straight Arch Salute loft the field and won by five lengths frosn Alias Muriel, who was well up over the concluding stages. Strategy did not finish on as strongly as he was expected to, and was three lengths behind Miss Muriel, and Kareao was fourth, and Kilgour, Alolyneaux and Sylvan were the next to finish
There was a good pool on the Winter Hurdles, for which all fifteen acceptors went to the post. Wi en the field settled down Hyginas went to the front, and passing the stand the first lime he was in charge from Multive, Gladful. Sir Fanciful and Sea Dell. Turning out of the straight Alteration was ftping particularly well in the fifth position, i Mid was moving up. A mile from home Sea Dell went to the front and led from Multive. A furlong later Alteration took charge. The was paver headed, xM s®
overtake him being fruitless, and he won by three lengths, and Sea Dell got the decision over Gladful for second money by a head. Penury Rose was fourth and Multive and Sir Fanciful were next. Pacific Slope broke down and Lord Kenilworth fell three fences from home. Another unvvelldy field contested the To Arc Handicap. Alllitaire and Passenger were among those iu favor when the field settled down. Elstedfodd took charge, with Silk Rein and Rebus handy. Silk Rein ran to the lead at the five furlong pest, and she and Rebuff were first to turn for home. Silk Rein was in trouble below the distance, and Rebuff went on alone. Then Tlgrinia shot out and quickly took command. Rebuff failed in the run home, and gave way to Lady Lucullus, but over the last fifty yards Inrd Desmond finished fast on the outer, and just got up in time to beat Lady Lucullus for second place. Tlgrinia won by two and a. half lengths, and Rebuff was fourth.
