(Notes by "Moturoa.”); The Well lugton Racing Club’s winter nie®lrf Ing, tte last of the important race gathers Ings of the season, opens at Trentham to-das and concludes on Saturday. In many respeetj this year's winter programzue differs from Uuii ot lasi year, tho Wellington Steeplechase beg ing relegated to the second day, and a plechasers' fiat race being Included. Modi remarkable of all Is tne large increase in slake money offered, every event carrying aM extra £lov or more, while the Steeplechaw has jumped from £IOOU t<4 £1590; tho Winter Hurdle Race from £76d| to £1590; the Final Hurdle Race from £404 to £700; and the Winter Oats Handicap fron| £4OO to £6OO. Such is the progress of rac4 ing under tte benlficene of the totsiisatorf Very fair weather (for the time of tli4 year) has favored training operations atf Trenthauß, and provided tho present weather obtains, a great meeting is Acceptances for too opening day are extremal ly numerous, and the acceptor* include high-i; eIMS jumpers like Lochelu, Coalition. ter Strow;.n» Gamecock, Multive, Hyginas, First Line, Om&ht;, Luke, etc., and tho fiat racers include Vag&bodQ? Molyneuux, Strategy, Biudle, Menelaais, RoyaJ Star, Mustard Pot, Hymestra, Glean - Sweep* Admiral Codrington. eta Hucks also artf strongly rfpr-»sen*ed, amongst the junipers beg? Ing Paddington Green, Yankee Jack, hlna, John Bunny, Tlgritiya, Kipling an<j| Demagogue, and good sprinters Ike Avis, Royal Mae, Eistedfodu, No Be 1 er, Mll*i taira, Tlgrinla, and other.;. Given fL / weather, fields should be large all ivond, an* racing first class. Proceedings will open with the Steepler chasers’ Flat Handicap, run ofer two -And. a, quarter miles, for proved steeplechasers an# qualified steeplechase rulers. Such an innoy ration is likely to prove puzzling to punt-sts at first, it being such a long time, since oral of the likely runners conteste I a event, and It uuay be even morc puzzling foqi the horoses themseives, as those who remtm*. ber the tale of the jumper running all oveg. tie course in a fiat race—looking for sor.fctiling to jump I However, Omabu, Mattock, Ltt* perino and Master Strow.au all have pace, axut the winner should *uvme from the quads I Possibly .Mattock will be sent out favorite, A big Held of twenty-seven confronts punti era in the Stewards’ Handicap, nix and possibly the finish will be as much, a* surprise as last year, rhea the ) 80-peep. The Trial Plate, a aix furlongs’ race fuij., horses that have never won a race exceed -hx 1 50 sovs. at time of oommation, fullowa,; I Weights arc as follows Two-year-olds, three-year olds 10.0: and four-year-olds .uidi upwards 10.2. Mares aud geldings are aU lowed 31b. As the list of entries was noC telegraphed Lt is given litre .-—Plume, Lyra, Great Effort, Red Luguo, Ledy Jewel, Jingleform, Lord Martian, Siberian. Of those that have shewn somo from tuck movt attractive appear to be Siberian, Dltch-i ley, Pam, Waimahoe, Rowan, Grotesque, andl Lady Nassau, and recent form po.-ita to Waimauoe, Lady Nassau and Jlownn beiun handy at tae finish. Liatowet was o strong order for this event last year, and &l| but Battle Knight, who won easily aud paid » nice "price."
The Vittoria Hurdle Race has attracted fourteen, including several ne.i-chums, .notably Tigritlya fud Counter Attack. TbM I oublic rarely trust their money jo debu.4 tants, however, and tho writer would not ba) eufprised to pet General Advance and Klpi Ung better backed to-day. The Parliamentary Handicap, one mile and a quarter, is rarely an easy race for the bulla of pickers, and with a field of twenty carded this time the task of finding n favorite is not an easy one. Strategy and Admiral Ccdrincton, if reserved, will carry big money, and report saya that ths former has been backed heavily. Molyneaux has ccnslstent form to recommend him, and amionpst tho likely light-weigths appear Jock, Arch Salute, and last year’s winner, Rose Pink. Strategy is likely to start a, solid favorite, but Moly-< neaux and Jock should not be neglected. A very fine field of fifteen are carded fob the Winter Hurdles, two miles and a quarter, and quite half a dozen merit support. Jjoehella may not be as fit as when he tan second with 11.7 to Slowcoach last year, 'But the other southerner. Gamecock, Is reported to be in great nick. Whether the son of San Francisco can hold ills own with the NorLi liw land horses remains to be seen, and on paper ihe appears to be overweighted. Multive, Hygmas and Gladful are a likely trio, but Lu-t i perino may not be forward enough yet to show , Uls best form. GladTui has been galloping I well, and on Ellerslie running shou’d give a good account of himself. The distance may be beyond Zola, and Sir Fanciful has Xpt to prove himself. Sea D&’il is given a. royal show with 9.12, and Alteration and Penury, Rose appear to complete the dangerous diri* alon. Whatever happens, GladfuL Sea De’R and Penury Rose should give their backers • good run for their money. Thirty remain in the Te Aro Handicap, seyeri furlongs, and there will be a big scramble for over the first few furlongs. Smart beginners like Mort Avis and Lady Kotiropo should have something to say in the aettlement of the event, and Passenger is another that la in great fettle at present. Mr. Kemball’s team will be ridden by x, Campbell, and C. Emerson’s mounts wm Include Bonnie Maid, Battle Scene fc Pitproft au<J
