COAL STRIKE.
FCKO IN PARLIAMENT. ATTACK ON THE GOVERNMENT. BRISK DEBATE IN THE COMMONS. By Te’egraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 9, 5.5 p.m. London, July 8. The House of Commons debated the eoal strike. Mr. J. Gould (Unionist), a Cardiff shipowner, in a striking speech, expressed doubt whether the settlement would guarantee an increased output. He declared that 150,000 miners would be displaced in the industry.
Lord Robert Cecil (Unionist) blamed the Government for its handling of tho struggle, particularly Mr. Lloyd George’s attack on Labor in a recent speech. Mr. Lloyd George hotly protested that this was misrepresentation, when Lord Robert Cecil sat down. He described Lord Robert Cecil’s speech as an unfair travesty and said that what he said was that in labor disputes the trouble is not with the responsible leaders but with the corporals, whom you never see, but who have the real power and no responsibility. Mr. W. Adamson (Labor) said the miners returned to work in anything but an amicable frame of mind. The question whether the miners were to pull the chestnuts out of the. fire for British industry or not w r as one which would ’ find a ready response in the minds of' the miners at the present time. Hoi urged an amnesty to the men imprisoned. for offences during the strike, even if the offenders were communists.— Aua.-N-Z. Cable Assn. TRIPLE ALLIANCE SPLIT. MR. THOMAS’ ACTION ENDORSED. London, July 7. The Railwaymen’s Conference heated■ly discussed action connected with the [strike, and a good deal of vituperation was hurled, at the executive by the extremists. The secretary declared that' the trou'ble was entirely due to the incapacity •of the miners’ executive to accept the ! opportunity offered, them. Eventually the conference overwhelmingly endorsed the action of My. Thomas and the executive in calling off the strike.
