FARM AND DAIRY.

SOUTH TARANAKI JERSEY BREEDERS’ SALE.

On Tuesday next at the South Taranaki Jersey Breeders’ female sale at Hawera, the dairy farmers and Jersey fanciers of New Zealand will have one of the greatest opportunities which has ever been offered to them of securing the best Jersey blood procurable in this country. » This is the first annual sale to be held under the auspices of this association, and in augurating the action the association realises that to make it a successful function nothing but good stock must be offered. With this end in view, and so as to eijsure that no culls would be submitted, they decided that no cows be offered unless the vendor was disposing of his whole herd, and in the case of heifers they would have to be passed and approved of by the executive before coming under the hammer. We feel sure that this is a very wise course, and should give probable buyers from a distance every confidence in being present. Amongst the whole herds to be offered are those of Messrs. Harry Hodge Alton and H. H. Buxton, “The Lakes,” Hawera. The former is full of Melina's General, Eminent’s Fontaine, and K.CmB. blood, and comprises fortytwo lots. The latter’s herd numbers 22, and practically every entry shows K.C.B. or Lord Twylish blood, which at the present time is recognised to be the most fashionable in the Jersey world. Other well known vendors are Messrs R. J, Linn (Normanby), Vaughan Harkness (Tariki), Fred Hoskins (Matapu), Chas. Goodson (Hawera), Robert Bremer (Waverley), H. Wells (Hawera), E. O'Sullivan (Tariki), H. Mullions (Hawera), etc. A big percentage of these lines are descended from such noted sires as those mentioned, also the Canadian squire Campanile’s Sultan, Majesty’s Fox, M.L.C., etc. If you have not received a catalogue, write to Taranaki Jersey Breeders’ Association to-day, and if you are interested be sure to attend the sale on Tuesday, the 12th inst. WINTER SCHOOL FOR FARMERS. The prospects for the forthcoming Winter School for farmers, which opens at Ruakura on the 18th inst., are very promising. The number of applicants this year is a record, totalling as it has done 120 farmers, who come from districts widely separated throughout the North Island, including Taranaki and even from the South island. In order not to disappoint any who have applied, the Department of Agriculture has decided to extend the period for a fortnight. Previously the duration of the school was one week. About half the number will be taken the first week, the remainder the following week, and the course set out will be merely repeated. These courses have grown in popularity since their inception in 1919. They are provided at the slack period of the year for busy farmers and stock-owners Who can devote only a limited time to study and intensive practical instruction. Thus they are afforded the opportunity of acquiring the greatest amount of useful information in the shortest time. Accommodation will be provided on the farm, so that the maximum amount of time can be spent in intimate touch with the field activities and indoor work.

Some new features are being introduced into the time-table this year. An up-to-date biograph is being installed in the new and commodious lecture hall in

the soldiers’ quarters. Each evening important phases of New Zealand farming will be dealt with. The chief Government photographer (Mr. Taylor), will be in attendance throughout the course and will operate the lantern, which will also be used for illustrated lectures. A room will be set aside for instructional aid in the form of farm seeds, manures, good type specimens of farm products, common weeds, specimens—identified and described—model poultry pens, houses, etc.
