INTER-ISLAND MATCH

VICTORY FOR THE NORTH. A SPLENDID GAME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, July 2. The North versus South Island match was played at Lancaster Park to-day iu the presence of about 7000 spectators. The day was dull and calm, and the ground slightly greasy. North won by 28 points to 13. It was a splendid exhibition of Rugby, defence being changed into attack in a twinkling, and the spectators being kept at the highest pitch of excitement throughout. North owed their win to the excellent combination of the rearguard, their work being really superb. Connolly and Jeffs were the weak spots in the South’s back division. The forwards were a grand lot, smothering the opposition from start to finish. They also carried the scrums, and with; more assistance from the backs, should have won. Steele, McCormack and Ford (backs), and Cabot, Scott and White (forwards) were in the picture throughout, while Donald, Moffat and Jacobs were the pick of the North Island vanguard. The backs were all good, Roberts and Baddeley especially so. The play throughout was, very even, and the scores are no criterion of the merits of the respective sides. For North Hughes (three), Baddeley, Jacobs, Moffat, Bellis, and Algur scored, two being converted by Roberts. Scott and White scored for South, Scott converting both and kicking a penalty goal. Mr. J. F. Peak was referee. WAIRARAPA BEAT HAWKE’S BAY. Carterton, July 2. W’airarapa and Hawke's Bay met in a representative Rugby match to-day. Wairarapa, won by 9 points to 8. WELLINGTON RESULTS. TWENTY-EIGHT POINTS TO NINE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 3, 5.5 p.im. Sydney, July 3. Though playing stubbornly a defensive game against the victorious Springboks, New South Wales never looked like turning the tables during the third test, which the visitors won by 28 points to 9. The match was played on a greasy ground, but in excellent weather, the sun shining, seemingly for the Springboks.

Dumeyer, who played in place of Van Heerden, opened the visitors’ account with a try after sprinting a quarter the distance of the ground. Mostert, from a forward rush, added a try, G. Morkel falling to convert either try. McKay crossed for New South Wales after the forwards had carried play down field, Mingay failing to convert. Strauss immediately replied by kicking a goal from the field, the scores at the .interval being 10 to 3 in the Springboks’ favor. The second term opened with- the Springbok forwards dominating play, although there were several fine, passing rushes by the New South Wales three-quarters. The visitors defended strongly, and solid ruck work forced the game on to New South Wales' line, where Kruger, obtaining the ball in the loose, scored, and G. Morkel converted. The Springboks’ pack continued to crowd their opponents, who seemed impotent against the attacks. Boyle Morkel obtained tire ball near the line and fell across, the try not bciug converted. Then two tries in quick succession were scored by Ellis and Clarkson, and both were converted by G. Morkel. The score was then 28 to 3. Off-side given against a Springbok player on the Springboks' line, gave Nothllng an opportunity to kick a goal, making the score 28 to 6. Sheehan, who played consistently through-. out, obtained the ball from the line-out, halfway up the field, and dodging through the opposing backs, scored a brilliant try, which was the gem of the match. Mingay failed to convert, the final scores being:— Springboks 28 New South Wales 9 THE LEAGUE GAME. NEW ZEALAND BEAT NEWCASTLE. Received July 3, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, July 3.
