THE ANNUAL MEETING. m, J ul y L lhe annual meeting of the Stratford Bowling Club was held in the club’s pavilion last night, a fair number of members being present. Before commencing the business of the meeting tho president asked all present to stand as a mark of respect to an exmember, the late Mr. W. H. Webb, and the late Mr. T. A. W. Nicholson, an expresident, who had died since the last annual meeting.
The annual report stated: The past season has been a very successful one from the players’ standpoint, the weather generally being very favorable during the latter portion of the season and the green being in excellent order. The pavilion alterations suggested at the last annual meeting have been carried out successfully; the club is now in the happy position of having an up-to-date home, and one that will fill its requirements for many years to come. Special attention was given to providing suitable-sized lockers, also to our social room which was well patronised, quite a number of pleasant evenings having been spent there. Another improvement carried out was the lowering of the bank on the north side and levelling the ground above, planting same with shrubs and flower beds. * The total cost of these improvements amounted to £432 15s. Owing to the late frosts last spring, the green at the beginning of the season were not all that could be desired. But through the determination of our capable green warden, Mr. W. Harris, he succeeded towards the end of the season in giving us a really good and we can assure members that vith the considerable winter attention Mr. Harris proposes to give, they can look forward with confidence to next year’s green surpassing all previous records. We have to report the following resignations during the season, which were accepted with regret: Mr. D. A. Cormack, Mr. V. Hay, Mr. E. F. Hollands, Mr. C. E. James, Mr. J. Ilentoul, Mr. R. D. Wilson, Mr. C. T. Foley and Mr. C. Arden. The special thanks of the committee are due to Mr. A. Davies, Mr. J. Paterson arid Mr. J. S. Lyons for the gift of the handsome entrance gate; also to Mr. G. N. Curtis for his donation towards the building fund; also to the president for donating a gold medal for the championship, and •to Mr. F. Gaffaney for a gold medal for the colts’ championship. Thanks are also due to those members who assisted the chair and table fund. The club wishes to place on record the loss sustained by the death of their vice-president, Mr. T. A. W. Nicholson, who was always a popular member on and off the green; and the club wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to Mrs. Nicholson and family in their sad bereavement. The balance-sheet showed the receipts for the year to be £259 7s 8d and the expenditure £194 15s Bd, giving a profit of £64 12s for the year's working. The president, Mr. J. S. Lyons, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that last year had been a very successful one.
Mr. Porritt, in seconding the adoption, said that the balance-sheet was the best that had ever been returned by the club. Mr. T. C. Fookes referred eulogistically to the work of the secretary, the green warden and the retiring officers, saying that the club had worked harmoniously without a jarring note. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ■
Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. P. Skoglund; vice-president, Mr. J. S. McDonald; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. Carman (re-electod); green warden, Mr. W. Harris (re-elected); hon. auditor, Mr. J. C. Allan; committee, Messrs. J. S. Lyons, J. W. McMillan, G. ■Smart, J. Butcher and A. H. Hillock. Considerable discussion took place as to the advisability of appointing one or more selectors, the opinion of the meeting being fairly evenly divided on the matter. It was finally decided to elect a sole selector, and Mr. J. S. McDonald was appointed to the position. Messrs. P. Skoglund and J. S. Lyons wore elected delegates of the club to tl?e centre.
Mr. Skoglund, who was a Stratford representative at the New Zealand tournament at Wellington last year, said that in his opinion the central tournament had become too unwieldy as at present managed. The last tournament was the worst managed of many he had attended. There were too many men and too many games. He suggested that the pairs singles should be held at another time of the year. Each bowling centre should find its own pairs and singles champions, who could meet at Wellington and fight out the finals.
It was decided that this suggestion be a remit to the next conference.
Mr. J. W. McMillan expressed the opinion that in the interest of bowling generally the banner matches should be abolished, or in the alternative, a north and south centre should be formed in Taranaki. The banner matches were not conducive to friendly rivalry and had prevented the interchange of play between several clubs. He moved that it be a recommendation that the banner matches be abolished.
The meeting approved the motion, with few dissentients. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting the president presented the medals and trophies to the winners of last season’s competitions as follows: Championship medal, Mr. Stan. Sharp (for the third time); colts’ championship medal (presented by Mr. F. D. Gaffaney), Mr. F. D. Clark; Easter tournament pair's championship medal, Messrs. Lyons and Finlay, and the runners-up, Messrs. S. Porritt. and W. Boyd; sealed handicap trophy, a handsome cake stand, Mr. A. White. *
Mr. F. D. Gaffaney suggested that the trophies and medals for next season’s competitions should be donated by enthusiasts of the club. Mr. Gaffaney offered to donate a medal for the colts’ championship or two similar medals for the winners of the Easter pairs. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Gaffaney.
Mr. G. Smart suggested that a donation of £5 each be made to the secretary and the green warden for the excellent work done during the year, and the meeting heartily concurred. The green warden complained of the j damage done to the club’s property by j the school children, who, he said, had the A»tt leading to the
and were contimmlly throwing atones nd the green. It was decided to ask.the school committee to take steps to pre-. vent a recurrence of the trouble.
At the conclusion of the business rew ffeshments were handed round, and the meeting proceeded to enjoy a convivial' evening, and a toast list was discussed with musical honors. ; VITAL STATISTICS.
