SALE OF JERSEYS.

MR. E. GRIFFITHS’ HERD. RECORD FOR THE DOMINION. The most successful sale of New Zealand pedigree Jersey stock that has yet taken place in this country was held* at Fencourt, near Cambridge, on Wednesday. It was the dispersal of the pedigree Jersey herd of Mr. E. Griffiths, of New Plymouth. The herd of cattle, including calves, averaged £l3l, the total’ for the 75 head being £9858. ‘ This is a New Zealand record for purebred Jersey stock, and probably for any other breed of pedigree dairy cattle. * There were two outstanding reasons for this—the submission to auction of the famous milk-record cow, “Lady Peggy” and many of her descendants, and the sale of a notable imported sire, together with many of his progeny.

There were visitors from all parts of the North Island, and an Australian buyer was represented by a Taranaki breeder. Among the visitors were Messrs. R. Cornwall (New Plymouth) and Lepper (Taranaki). Altogether over three hundred people were present. The top price was 400 guineas, which is the highest figure yet paid at auction for a cow or heifer of any breed in this country. It was due to the success of this heifer in the shows of last season that a record price was realised.

, The lot that attracted most attention was the famous cow “Lady Peggy,” which has produced in six seasons 3,861 lb. of butter-fat, commencing this remarkable record at the age of one year and ten months. “Lady Foggy” is obviously a great producer, as she has a fine matronly head, a great heart-girth, a big body, and a capacious, well-attach-ed udder. Her top-line is remarkably good. She is the roomy, low-set type of Jersey that is looked for by the utility breeder. Amongst the purchases were the following for Taranaki:— BULLS. Viola’s Golden Laddie, imp. (October, 1913), by Miss Viola’s Handsome Noble —Golden Beatrice 11. —300gns., Bell, Ohakau, Taranaki. COWS.
