On June 11, a Farewell dance was given to Mr. and Mrs. Bates and Mr. K. Cawsey, a fair number being present. Duriag the evening Mr. Schwieters assured the guests of the sorrow all felt In losing such willing helpers hi the social Ufa of the district. Messrs. Bates and Cawsey briefly responded. As the result of a serious accident during blasting operation at 1:1s farm on Douglas road, Mr. J. Rodgers is now In the Stratford hospital with a badly smashed leg. At the time of the accident, Mr. Rodgers was by himself at the back of the farm, and it speaks volumes for his amazing fortitude when it was stated that he travelled with the ait) of two batons usetfi as crutches for a d!s J tance of, 60 chains through hough country before his calls for help were heard. It
was at first feared he would lose his - log, but it is satisfactory to note that he is now progressing favorably. The local tennis club was responsible for one of the most successful balls ever held in Douglas, a record crowd being present, including visitors from many miles distant. The floor was in good order, and Messrs. A. and J. Walter as M.C.s kept the dances merrily moving to music supplied by Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra. During the evening a waltzing competition drew ten entr - s, when some excellent waltzing was witness-. '. The judges (Messrs. Gernhoefer, Aitken, and Healey) awarded the verdict, a tie between Mr. H. Hunt and Miss Davis, and Mr. R. McMullian and Ail's. Hancock, the former couple winning the toss for first place. Two guessing competitions were also held, one for the name of a doll, and the other for the weight of a cake. They drew a good response, 85 tickets being taken in each. Miss R. Reid guessed the name "Rose” and won the doll and Mrs. Hancock won the cake. Tie principal item of interest during the evening was the drawing by Mr. E. Walter, of the "Art Union,” in aid of tte tennis club’s funds, the winning number 904, being held by Mr. N. Harris, of Tolso, and the secctad 94, by Master J. Wilmshurst, of Douglas. The club will no doubt benefit to the extent of a very fair sum and it is hoped that a court will be prepared in lime for next season’s play.
