BOXING.

ELTHAM TOURNAMENT. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Eltham Boxing Association are to be congratulated on the success that attended ■tl'e tournament which was held in the Eltham Town Hall last night. The hail was crowded, visitors being present from New Plymouth and Wanganui, all parts of Taranaki being represented. Complete arrangements had been made for the success of the tournament, and all the officials—from the president (Mr. H. D. Fonsyth). who made a very capable announcer, to the secretary (Mr. J. W. Turnbull), and h!s assistant (Mr B. G. Tayler) are to be congratulated on the results achieved. There was no delay between the bouts. Mr. Tim Tracey was referee.

Tl heavy-weight professional contest between McAsey (Lepperton) and Scott (Wanganui) proved a great contest, being very clean and open, each boxer rousing the enthusiasm of the spectators by his display, (here being little ococas’on for the refree to call break Scott did most of the leading, and th’s suited McAsey, who wort on points over the full distance. Scott fought it plucky fight, making a great recovery after going down In the light-weight professinal contest there was a good deal of clinching. Thomas, who was making his debut ns u professional, gained the verd.ct on points over the full ' distance from Hart, the ex-New South Wales man, showing better in the open, hut lacking weight in his blows, many of which Thomas evaded. The amateur bouts all went the full distance and proved very interesting, two particularly proving very open. HEAVY-WEIGHT BOUT.

L. McAsey (Lepperton) 11.0, beat W. Scott (Wanganui), 11.2 on points. This proved very willing, Scott forcing the fighting and driving to the face. McAsey, who opened quickly, showed cleverness In evading, and mixed it well towards the end of the round. In the second round Scott essayed an up-per-cut which failed to connect, McAsey landing to the face and ducking the return. Some good bouts of clean fighting followed, in which Scott did most of the leading, McAsey cleverly countering. , In the third McAsey landed to the face with a right and left, rattling Scott, who smothered nicely and led, only to be driven to the ropes, the gong being welcome. McAsey, who bad been content to wait, assumed the aggressive in the fourth on opening, but steadied up, and Scott got home with a straight left. The final stages were even.

In the fifth, after a quiet opening, McAsey led, but was stopped by two lefts to the fa.ee, but in the following mix up McAsey /lazed his opponent with a straight left to the jaw, and following it up with lefts and rights, dropoped him, the gong saving Scott at seven.

After sparring for an opening in the sixth McAsey scored to the body, but Scott showed good evasion. Scott was the better for the rest, and in the opening of the seventh again made the fighting, but McAsey scored In close work to the face with both hands, and later drivinig to the face, but missed. In the eighth round McAsey essayed a right swing, which missed, and countering a lead, drove to the face with a straight left. Each mixed it at the finish.

Scott again led from the jtimp, and had the advantage In the close work which followed, later connecting to the face with a right twice In succession, evening up points a little.

The final round was willing. McAsey led for an opening and slipped. A good exchange close up followed, and then McAsey drove Scott to the ropes, but the latter recovered well and forced the fighting, McAsey easily keeping him off. There was no question as to the verdict McAsey wins. THE LIGHT-WEIGHT CONTEST. Hart did most of the leading in the first round, ttough Thomas showed cleverness in evasion and connected in close work with short hooks. The second round was also Hart’s, the New South Wales man connecting with a straight left to the face on two or three occasions. The third round saw a lot of close fighting. In which Thomas showed to advantage, the referee ordering tte men not to wrestle. Hart failed to connect with his left, but scored later to the face. An even round. The fourth round was a repetition, Hart connecting with his left, and Thomas then coming in and scoring to the face and body in close work. Thomas’ roundThe fifth and sixth rounds were practically repetitions, being mostly close work, in which Thomas stone, whilst Hart showed up better in what open work thAre was, though his blows lacked force. The seventh round went to Hart, who scored with the left to the face on three occasions. The eighth round was more open. Hart having the advantage. Tte ninth round was another series of clinches, relieved by occasional straight left leads from Hart. The last round saw Hart again lead, followed by another clinch, after which Hart led with right and left to face. A good mix up at the finish saw both very groggy. Thomas the winder gained a mixed reception. AMATEUR BOUTS. Barnes (Wanganui) 9.1, defeated Julian (Eltham) 8.12, in a bout that went the full four rouonds. The first round was easily the Wanganui man’s, who scored with a straight left to the face repeatedly. The nex* two r..nnds were more even, but the r ourth wns also Barnes’, who was the more fit. It was i a good open contest. R. Fitzsimmons (Matnpu) 11.2, defeated Corl's* (Wanganui) 10.5 on points after a bout which went the full six two-minute rounds. Fitzsimmons, who possessed the advantage In weight and reach, forced the pace. He is a two-handed fighter, though be lost points through wild swings. In the fifth round he appeared to be tiring. Corliss essayed for a knock-out, but in the final round Fitzsimmons ngaln mixed it, the round being even. The feather-weight bout between S; Hope (New Plymouth) 9.0, and A.
