FELT IN THE NORTH ISLAND. DAMAGE IN SOME TOWNS. By TtlegTAph.—Press Association. Eltham, June 29. There was a severe earthquake at 1.30 this morning. Its duration was approximately one minute. No damage is reported. Wanganui, June 29. A severe earthquake was felt at 1.30 a.m. lasting over a minute and causing considerable alarm and some damage to chimneys, crockery and glassware. Palmerston N., June 29. A violent earthquake shock, lasting 60 seconds, was experienced at 1.30 a.m. There was no material damage. Taihape, June 29. A very severe earthquake was experienced at 1.28 this morning. One plate glass window was broken, statuary smashed and several chimneys are down. Hastings, June 29. There was a violent earthshake at 1.30 a.m., lasting 75 seconds from first to last. Several chimneys are down, plate glass and shop windows smashed, crockery and bottles in shops and hotels broken, but no serious damage is reported. A severe earthquake, lasting 60 seconds, was experienced at 1.30 this morning. Buildings swayed to an alarming degree and scared residents, who rushed into the open. One resident says the trees and shrubs in his neighborhood swayed as if dancing a hornpipe. Pahiatua, June 30. The severest shock of earthquake experienced for many years woke up the town at 1.3» a.m. It lasted nearly 30 seconds. Some damage to crockery is reported. Auckland, June 29. An earthquake was felt in Auckland at 1.30, but was very light. It was felt by few people. Passengers on the Main Trunk train felt the shake while the train was at a station. Carterton, June 29. A prolonged earthquake was experienced at 1.27 this morning preceded by a loud long rumble, the shake, which lasted nearly a minute, was not severe, but steady and undulating, travelling south and north. No damage was done. WELLINGTON’S EXPERIENCE. There was a vefy • sharp shock of earthquake in Wellington at 1.32 yesterday morning. It was preceded by two tremors, so distinct as to almost be shocks in themselves. The main “shake” was one of the most severe experienced in Wellington for a very long time. Hanging lamps oscillated quite violently for a time, and buildings shook quite noticeably. So far as could be ascertained, little or no damage occurred.
