AN ERUPTION.
VOLCANO BREAKS OUTVIOLENT EXPLOSIONS. POPULATION IN A PANIC. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 30, 1.15 a.m. Rome, June 28. After ominous rumblings Stromboli has erupted, providing one of the worst eruptions in history. Dense clouds of steam arose and there were violent explosions. Streams of incandescent stones were hurled to a great height, causing fires on the mountainside. Showers of ashes obscured the horizon for hours and the population in the neighborhood had difficulty in breathing. Panic spread, increasing at night, when indescribable terror reigned. People rushed to the shore, entering the sea and crowding die boats, several of which were swamped, it is believed a number were drowned, but impenetrable darkness prevented details being obtained.
Torpedo boats have rushed from Messina with orders to wireless the Island’s needs. —Times Service.
Stromboli is an island near Messina, in Sicily, with an active volcano 3040 feet in height. There have previously been serious eruptions in this locality.
