Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., returned from Wellington last night. Mr. F. A. Jacobsen, Government Apiary Instructor, is in New Plymouth for a few days. Mr. L. C. H. Dawson, of New Plymouth, is to referee in the Canterbury Brown Shield match. A cable from London reports the death of Sir Robert Nathan, a secret service official, who unearthed a German plot in 1915 to assassinate Allied Sovereigns and Premiers. Mr. F. T. Redman, who with his son is taking over the Manaia Witness, was presented with a eilver tea service and oak tray from the staff of the W.F.C.A. at Masterton, where he has been cashier for many years pact. News has been received 'by mail of the death at Herne Bay, Kent, England, on April 29, of Captain J. M. Syme, formerly well-known in Auckland shipping and business circles. For many years Captain Syme wa<s a resident of Devonport, but went to England in 1902. ■ The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and the borough manager (Mr. F T. Bellringer), who have been visiting Wellington on Borough Council business, return to New Plymouth by the mail train to-night. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Education and Health) will arrive in New 'Plymouth from Wellington by the mail train on Monday night. The Minister will stay here until about midday on Tuesday, when he goes to Hawera to open the Winter Show there. The Rev W. A. Sinclair, who conducted the services at the Methodist Church at Stratford on Sunday, became seriously ill on Monday. He had been laid up recently, but, on medical advice, had decided to carry out his engagements in Taranaki. Captain Friberg, in charge of the Hawera Salvation Army, farewells next Sunday for Inglewood. His successor will be Adjutant and Mrs. Avenall, wellknown officers of high standing. Theif past appointments include Gisborne, Christchurch, Dunedin and Newton.
