London, June 24. rhe third round of the golf championship was played in lot weather and with a reduced wind. Going lomewards he slightly sliced his drive into a pothole, but made a magnificent mashie recovery and reached the green. At the thirteenth he missed a two yard putt for four. At the fourteenth (516 yards) he made a brilliant second with a baffy and found the green, but missed a yard putt for four. At the seventeenth (436 yards), the road hole, which' ruined many cards, Kirkwood drove gloriously and reached pin high with the iron. A brilliant cut with the niblick lifted him within a safe putt. The result of the last round was a tie between Wethered and Hitchinson, who play off to-morrow. Kirkwood, who only took 73 for the third round, showed magnificent steadiness, and with a little more luck with his short putts would tare returned sensational figures. His steadiness was in marked con least with the erratic form of some others' who occupied leading places half way. Ray took 81, Hutchinson 79, and McLean 82. Wethered and Hutchinson headed the final with 296. Kirkwood, who took 79 for the last round, was 302. KIRKWOOD’S LAST ROUND. Like many older and more experienced championship players, Kirkwood’s fourth round, played In sultry heat, spoilt the strong position he held at the end of the third round. At the second hole he sliced his drive. The fiery greens accounted for bad figures at the fifth and seventh. Going homeward he played beautifully until the sixteenth. He narrowly missed a putt for three at the fourteenth. At the sixteenth a pulled drive left him in a bush in a hazard, necessitating playing backwards. A good approach was spoilt by missing an 18-lnch putt. He had at least two slipped strokes, each on run up approaches. Outwards his score was 4,5, 5,4, 6,4, 5, 3 4—40. Homewards he took' 4, S, 4,4, 4,4, 6,5, 5—39. London June 24. KIRKWOOD INTERVIEWED. London, Jftme M. Kirkwood, interviewed by the Australian Press, said he was disappointed over his last round. He felt he had an unusually rough spin of bad luck. A steward at the third hole put him off by shouting to the spectators when he was making a drive, at which Kirkwood protested. This rather rattled him for several holes. However, he thought he had a hope and expected to finish better. He felt ho had not disgraced Australian golf tn tying for sixth place.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
