BOMB STRIKING FACTS
(To the Editor.) Sir, —As a German tourist now travelling through your country’, and deeply Interested in matters affecting the welfare of the community, I have been much struck with the similarity of the outlook here with that in Germany. I must say that I have been considerably surprised at this, as I have always been taught to believe that you considered your vaunted civilisation to be very much superior to our "kultur." I cull the follow* Ing various reports of legal proceedings. They are from records of Courts sitting in various towns from Auckland to the Bluff:— (1) Two men who claim to have conscientious objections to filling up the census forma were fined respectively £lO and £5, one being a second offender. (2) For allowing noxious weeds to spread from his farm a farmer, after being warned five times by the Inspector, was fined £3. I understand that the spreading of these seeds of noxious weeds costs the community thousands of pounds per annum. (3) A vendor to children of ice cream not containing sufficient butter-fat was fined £l. (4) A driver of a motor car travelling about 30 miles an hour along a crowded street ran Into a farmer's gig, emasted it to atoms, stripped the harness off the horse, and knocked the driver into the air. ’ He was fined 10s. (5) A driver In a state of Tntoxfcation driving without lights ran Into a motor car killing one of the occupants and Was fined £2 6s for being drunk, and convicted only for driving without lights. Now, Sir, the above instances prove to ma that matters such as the above mentioned are treated by you tere in New Zealand very much in the same way ns we treat them in Germany. The world knows that we have no regard for the sacredness of lite, whether it be infant life or adult, and the world also knows that we insist very strongly upon the compliance of our citizens With’ the regulations laid down for their guidance, as you also seem to do In the matter of census’ regulations referred to above. I can only add that tte similarity, ef the outlook between ,
your nation and ours must undoubtedly ta time strengthen those bonds of brotherly love which It Is the earnest desire of all nation! to multiply.—l am etc''HUN.** ’ Stratford, June 23.
