TARANAKI’S WEALTH.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Congratulations to tho president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce (E. P. Webster), on his fine reyiew of things In general and Taranaki in particular, and the optimistic spirit shown. Do we realise what a magnificent district this is, and are we boccnlng it along right lines? I was wonderfully struck with an advertisement in your issue of the same date, put in by one of the Auckland Commercial Houses (which is out after money to increase its business). In this advertisement there appears a table showing the exports of the leading ports of the Dominion, which does not show Taranaki In the favorable position she should take. The table shows Auckland exports for the last four months at £6,380,213, Wellington £2,115,807, Lyttelton £1,653,430, Wanganui £1,521,535, New Plymouth £1,391,94(1, Napier £1,291,842, Patea £1,001,810, and Waltara Is not mentioned. Now, Sir, as the Chamber of Commerce is dealing with Wellington over the question of each district getting credit for what It exports, I should like to suggest that they try to get the three Taranaki ports bracketed in their reports. ,If this were done Taranaki would come second on the list. I have not the figures by me what Waitara exported during J.hls period, but, say, it was only £ 250,000.. The three ports combined, representing Taranaki, would export half a million pounds worth more than Wellington in the same time. Truly a marvellous result I No wonder the exports for Taranaki are 100 per cent, ahead of the Dominion average of £4O per head. Now, Sir, when you take into consideration the four months' exiiorts Qf Taranaki at something like £2,646,000, with probably the worst autumn the district has experienced for 25 years, and practically none of the wool sold, what kind of r backing is this for the hydro-electric scheme if properly put before financiers?—! am etc., WILLIE J. FREKTH. **”kearnlie, June 21
