Air. A. A. Stewart, of Eltham, who was recovering from an illness, has had a relapse and been taken to a private hospital. Sir William Herries, whose health is much improved, is returning to New Zealand early irv July (says a cable from London) . At the Supreme Court on Wednesday in AVanganui Air. H. D. Caplen was admitted as a hamster by Mr. Justice Hosking on the motion of Mr. F. K. Turnbull. A x cable from Melbourne reports the death of Air. Claude Bantock, the comedian. Mr. Bantock was well-known in New Zealand as a member of J. C. Williamson’s companies. Air. Newton Berry, of London, late lecturer with the British Y.M.C.A. amongst the troops in France, and who is making a world tour, is on a brief visit to New Plymouth. The Rev. A. C. Lawrey, general secretary for the New Zealand Methodist centenary celebrations, is expected to visit New Plymouth next week, remaining here from Thursday until the following Monday. He will be accompanied by the Rev. AV. A. Sinclair (foreign missions secretary) and the Rev. T. G. Brook (home missions secretary), both former ministers of the New Plymouth Circuit. The death of the late Air. W. L. Newman was referred to at the annual meeting of the New Plymouth Bowling Club last night. Mr. W. N. Ewing, in moving a vote of condolence to Airs. Newman and relatives, paid a glowing tribute to the services rendered to the club by the late Air. Newman. For many years Mr. Newman had been a member of the club and had taken a keen and lively interest in its progress. The resolution was passed in silence, all present standing. A telegram from Ashburton says Mr. S. P. McCallum, Rhodes scholar, who was born and educated in Ashburton, was yesterday the recipient of a wallet containing £l5O towards his expenses at Oxford. The Mayor (Air. Galbraith), at a public ceremony, expressed Ashburton’s pride in its worthy son and its determination to provide annually a donation towards Mr. McCallum’s expenses. Air. McCallum leaves for Oxford shortly. Two members of the New Plymouth Bowling Club, Air. J. Paton and Mr. R. Cock, tendered their resignations to the annual meeting last night, the former having left the district to take up his residence at Auckland. Air. Cook’s resignation evoked a lengthy discussion, members pointing out that he was the only surviving original member of the New Plymouth Club and his withdrawal would be a. considerable loss to the institution. It was finally decided not to accept the resignation, and Mr. Cock was elected a life member of the club in recognition of his splendid services.
