The weather was dull and wet and the going was heavy for the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting held in conjunction with the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club to-day. New Zealand Sapling Stakes, run at the Ashburton T.C. meeting last week, provided a remarkable finish, Latona getting up in the last few strides to win by a head from Betrayer, who was a neck in front of the favorite. Grade Thorpe. Insurrection (Kilbroney- Ruthful) was a runner in the Sandringham Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at *the V.R.C. Birthday meetin, and after getting a bud passage, finished close up fourth. J. Lowe has taken him to Sydney, where lie should soon pick up a fair race. Mr. T. H. Lowry’s recent purchase, the six-year-old horse King John, will he mated with sixteen or seventeen of Mr. Lowry’s own mares next season, and in addition six outside subscriptions will be. taken. The outsiders booked are; Straga, Salute, Tresslda, Makepeace, Chuckle and Star Glow. The Australian horseman F. Bullock, who recently won the French Oaks on Donizade, is no stranger to the land of "parlez-vous." Last year he won the Grand ITix de Paris (£13,235), and the Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe (£G000), both on the English-bred horse Coimradp.
