BOWLING

WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. London, June 21. The New Zealand bowlers beat Dumbarton by 118 to 99. THE NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. THE ANNUAL REPORT. The 37th annual report ’of the New Plymouth dub states, inter alia, that the club commenced with a credit of £136, which increased to £204 by the end of the year, whilst the debit balance in the other account, which has to do with the new greens, is £429. The membership is increasing. Seventeen joined and five left. The report dealts at length with the sale . of the old green, which tad served the club for 36 years, and had many valued and precious associations for old members, but conditions were changing, and provision had to be m~.de for the future, which had been done by purchasing the Leach and Countenay Streets property. The Saturda? half-holiday made it necessary to provide for many more ( players. Instead of as heretofore they being I accommodated on Thursday and Saturday | afternoons. On the question of providing for competition the report states: — Owing to the growth of some of the clubs, | it has been found necessary to enter an A , and B. team in the Banner Competition to enable all players to take part. This system j has worked well, but of course has length- i ened each round of the competitions, and . left little !.f any time to play other than I Banner matches. An alternative proposal could be adopted by entering one teacn only, consisting of as many players as opposing clubs can get together, which would in some cases be from twelve to fifteen rinks, half playing on home greens and half on opposi ing dubs’ green. Jhjs method would shorten

the rounds considerably, and leave a number of half holidays which could be devoted to other matches, not-> competitive, but friendly games and also club competitions. In regard to erecting a pavilion, the committee had sought to submit plans for a concrete building in keeping with the importance of the standing of the club. It was for (members to say wheteher the building should be proceeded with or left over until building became more favorable. The report describes the laying down of the new greens and the difficulties encountered. The greens nad played well for new ones, and this year it was expected they would pc fairly perfect. The committee had felt something should be done to provide a croquet lawn on the piece of ground alongside the greens, and If the ladies could assist In raising funds to provide a pavilion it might be possible to put down the green and form a croquet club. The report refers to the visit of the Auckland team, of the Wanganui team, the provincial tournament, and the past season’s work generally. Mr. J. R. Hill had donated a cup for first year players. The senior championship was won by N. Johnston, the junior by J. J. Lomas, the senior's handicap by F. Hooker, the junior handicap also by F. Hooker, and the pairs handicap by J. McLeod and A. E. Washer.
