INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Inglewood, June 20. A meeting of members of the Inglewood Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday last, when there were about 20 present, who had a first practice of parts of Lionel Monckton’s opera, “A Country Girl”, which the society had chosen for presentation in the ' Town Hall here, at a date to be decided on later. It is satisfactory to know that one prime difficulty—the help of a suitable pianist—has been overcome, and that now no further obstacles to the forward movement of the society’s undertaking are immediately visible, though it is hoped that this expression of vitality on its part will induce other lovers of music and drama to join the ranks. Henceforth practices are to be held weekly in the Parish Hall at 7.30 p.m. each Tuesday. There was a good attendance at Newton King, Ltd.’s weekly mart sale on Saturday. Though but few pigs were brought forward, and poultry were not plentiful, there was a considerable quantity of other articles for sale. The pigs sold at from Ils to 14s for slips, and 25s for young store sows; cocks made 2s 6d, and hens 3s Id.* A quantity of trees, shrubs, etc., from Mr. J. Horn’s, Westown, sold well. Barberry plants in bundles sold at Is 4d and 2s, according to age. A quantity of vegetables, including cauliflowers up to 2s each, onions at 5s to 7s 6d per sack, as well as cabbages, pumpkins, etc., were also readily disposed of.
