German and other Continental centres competed very strongly throughout. Yorkshire buyers were more reserved. The opening prices for merinos were well maintained. The finest sorts closed with rather less competition, but medium combings and all pieces and bellies closed at the strongest level of the series, generally showing 10 per cent, advance on May prices for all sorts. Crossbreds met with greatly improved demand throughout, fiife grades closing about 7% per cent, above May prices, and medium and lower grades/about May parity. The latter hardly maintained the highest point of the opening week. THE PRICE OF GOLD. Wellington, June 20. The High Commissioner advises the Treasury by cable, dated London, June 16, that the price of gold to-day is £5 8s 7d for shipments to America. DUNEDIN WOOL SALES. Dunedin, June 20. The wool sales in three catalogues were completed at lunch time. Ninety per cent, were sold. There was exceptionally good competition, pieces and bellies in some eases bringing more than the fleece wool of the same clips. Merino sold up to ll%d. Prices for low crossbreds to fine half-breds, other than supers, were considerably above the London parity. Crossbred sold up to half-bred to 10%d. NEWTON KING, LTD., REPORTS. At. Mangatokl on the 13th inst. we conducted a clearing sale on account nf Mr. E. WHtham, at which buyers attended in strong numbers, and a brisk and successful sale was the result. A most satisfactory average of £l4 5s was obtained for the large herd of over 90 cows, othet quotations being:— Weaner Jersey heifers £5 108, bulls £5 10s, and good all-round farm horses £2B to £37 10s. At Stratford on the 14th we report a fair yarding, and prices on a level with late rates. Wethers 15s, store cows 10s, 15s, 21s, better sorts 31s, £2 10s, weaner steers Ils, 20montli do. £2 15s, £3 3s, Jersey weaner heifers £4, dairy cows £l2, £l3. On the same day we conducted a clearing sale at Bell Block on- account of Mr. J. Polotti. Mr. Poletti has been a very staunch supporter*, of the Jersey breed for (many years, and consequently had built up a herd possessing outstanding quality* which was widely known, as could be seen by the large number of buyers which attended the from all parts of Taranaki, and also from .as far south as Feilding. The cows were looking in very good order, considering the exceptionally dry season just passed. Bidding was brisk from the outset, and £3O was passed on many occasions, £B7 being the highest price for the day. The herd of 43 cows averaged £2l. The 2-year heifers which were a shade on the small side, sold well nevertheless, as high as £l5 being obtained for the best. Other quotations:— Sows and litters £4 5s to £5 7s 6d, store pigs 26s to 38s Gd. At Inglewood on the 15th the yardings of both sheep and cattle were an improvement on late sales, and the general tone of the market throughout showed a considerable strengthening of values on many classes. Tlb improvement was particularly noticeable with lambs and weuners. There was also very strong enquiry for dairy cattle, and a heavy yarding was dealt with, little remaining unsold. Launbs 6s 6d, 8s Bd, fat do. 12s 6d, 13s 3d, 2-tooth wethers 12s, fat wethers 21s 3d, ewes in lamb Bs, weaner heifers 20s, 355, Jersey do. £2 Is, £2 14s, empty heifers £3 2s 6d, weaner steers 15s, 18s 6d, 18month do. 335, £2 ss, springing heifers £9, £9 10s, £lO ss, choicer quality do. £ll, £l2 10s, £l3 15s, dairy cows £8 10s. £9 10s, £lO lOs, better sorts £l2, £l4, £l5. At Rahotu on June 16 a small yarding sold at late rates. Weaner heifers 255, Jersey do. £3 18s, store cows 255, in-calf heifers £3 2s Gd, £4, £5 10s, dairy cows £lO 17s 6d. HAMILTON MARKETS. Die Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering company report:— At Hamilton on Thursday 16th, we had an average yarding of all classes of stock, and with slight exception, cleared the whole entry. Competition for beef was not quite so brisk as the previous week although values were much on the saime basis. A line of young cows on account of T. Wilson and Sons, Waimai, ranged from £7 14s to £8 15s, averaging for the Hue £8 2s 6d, other cows from £6 5s to £7 15s. Only a few steers were penned and these did not reach reserves. Competition for store cattie showed considerably more spirit, and prices advanced all round. Good 2%-year steers, Polled Angus, made to £6 Ils, rough sorts to £4 15s, two-year steers £4 7s, 20-month steers £3 to £3 7s, smaller £2 5s to £2 12s 6d. The calves yarded were in low condition, but advanced in value making up to 225, smaller 5s to 15s. Dairy heifers at profit made from £lO to £l2, dairy cows backward in both senses of the term £3 to £4 15s. The demand for sheep was not equal to tte previous week, although most of the entry was afterwards cleared. Fat wethers unade to £1 4s Gd, fat ewes to 19s 6d, store wethers, 2-tooth 12s 3d, store lambs 9s 3d. The pig market which was noticeably short of heavy baconers was a little easier, the best making to £5 2s, porkers 35s to £3, slips 17s 6d to 275, weaners 5s to 12s 6d.
