The chairman said the by-laws provided that the occupier was responsible and any private arrangements could not override the bylaws. In 'reference to the stocking of firewood on the roadside, it was resolved that a number of offenders in this matter be prosecuted, the engineer to place a list of offending cases on the table at each meeting for the consideration of the council. CORRESPONDENCE. ■ The Public Works Department wrote asking the council to supply the requirements of the district for jiublic works expenditure to be placed on the estimates for the year. In regard to the Kapuni bridge it was resolved to apply for a grant of £4OO. It was decided to apply to the Government for a £1 for £1 subsidy up to £lOO for metalling on the Mohaka Road. A. W. King, of York Road, notified that his cowshed had been damaged by flying rock while blasting was in operation opposite his property by county employees, and his hay paddock had been littered with rock. On behalf of the Cardiff School Committee, J. Richards applied for the erection of danger signals near the school as a warning to motor traffic, which had become a menace .to the school children. —The chairman pointed out that it was neessary to erect danger signals to limit the speed of motors. It would cost about £3 for the notices at each school, and it would be necessary to erect signals at all the schools in the county. It was left in the hands of the engineer to prepare estimates, etc., and report to the next meeting of the council.

Ratepayers on the Pembroke Road wrote applying for repairs to be done on the road, stating that it would soon become impassable.—Mr. Pitt said that it was advisable that the north riding should take over the control of a part of the Barclay Road, and a resolution to this effect was carried. THE RATES. The rates for the. ensuing year were fixed at a similar rate as that of last year.
